Re: Rugby League - don't forget Clive Sullivan, first black captain of both England and the RL Lions (I'd posit the first black captain of any sport for England / G. On the subject of Billy Boston, I interviewed him once for a fanzine at his pub in Wigan. Absolute legend, gave me all the time I wanted and was an absolute pleasure to meet.

Tewfik is a good call, well remembered. How about in the modern / post-war era. Can anyone remember someone before Charlie Palmer?
See above. And I think there was a Scottish INTERNATIONAL who predated Wharton, I refuse to use wiki someone else needs to troll round

Anyone who saw that try he scored against the Aussies back in the day could NEVER forget him. Fastest 100m ever whilst carrying a ball....

    Edit: 11.92 seconds, bl**dy H*ll.

    Don’t know how I forgot Clive Sullivan...unforgivable.
You interviewed Billy Boston? I am genuinely in awe. Used to score regularly against my team but is high on my list of all time great sportsmen.

P.S. Never could stand Eddie Waring...sorry, Rog.

Unless ‘black’ now means exclusively of ‘West Indian or negro’ origin then, imo, Andy’s call is good.
The first famous player to fit that ‘origin’ that I can remember was West Ham’s Clyde Best who must be around seventy now.
Being brought up on Rugby League I never understood what all the fuss was about...there were loads of ‘black’ RL players in the sixties...the great Billy Boston, Mike Elliott and Colin Dixon to name but three and a collection of lesser known Fijians who seemed to largely end up at Rochdale for some reason.
Never seemed to matter one jot until the neandertals turned up to start chucking bananas and moronic abuse.
I knew Clyde slightly and also played with his nephew (they were Bermudian and I worked there for a few years back in the day). Also Sean Goater's uncle.... but its a very small place so not difficult!

I know many middle eastern (and indeed east indian) people who would be mortified if you described them as black. This says as much for arab racial prejudices as it does for skin tones, but I hold my line on the overthinking!

I have a book at home that has that info in. Depends if you mean the first 'signing' or the first 'player', the one that kicked off the first match. First ever game was against a team called Great Lever, in 1884, first league game was against Bolton and I understand the Rams nearly had their points docked because someone in the crowd passed round a line drawing of a bad refereeing decision
