I run up the Great Lakes to Toledo Ohio on the Stag Line ship Photinia. We run in ballast all winter from the Manchester Ship Canal to bring back corn. When the St Lawrence Seaway closed in December we went to Philadelphia,we got battered in winds and heavy seas off the Beaufort scale,a clinker built lifeboat come off one davit and smashed itself to pieces on my cabin.

After I had left Stag Line I heard that the Photinia dragged anchor and ran aground in a storm off Detroit and was scrapped, this was about 1975/6.

So you must have come through the Welland Canal in between Lakes Erie and Ontario which is just down the road from me.

Certainly did,a couple of times with Stag Line and a few times with Bowring Steamship Company, carried wheat from Chicago or Milwaukee to the Soviet Union or India,We part loaded until we got through the canals then topped off at the mouth of the St Lawrence. We once loaded wheat and also the machines to discharge the cargo into barges off Chittagong Bangladesh,The Canadian Government paid us engineers to look after the machines they supplied which were sucker blowers powered by Detroit Diesals.People think the wheat donated to poor countries went straight to the people but it just went to the government who sold it to merchants who then sold it on to those who could afford it.
