This is basically a legalised version of an age of Cosa Nostra (Sicilian mafia), Mafioso scam. A more modern example would be the Manchester gangs protection rackets in the 1980s; siphoning the inventory off from a legitimate business they are 'protecting' from other gangs until the business has nothing left to sell or trade & goes bankrupt.

The owner funnels the money / profit from merchandise & player sales into MASH holdings whilst the club accounts are constantly in arrears leading to MASH or the owner needing to 'inject' funds to keep the club afloat.
