I reckon Liverpool were the first to adopt it, with other clubs changing the lyric to “you’ll never walk again”

Pink Floyd fans will know it makes a short appearance on the LP Meddle, on the track called Fearless
Yes they added the recording because john Peel was a Liverpool fan. I understand that Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets still include it in their set list. Great track!

A beautiful song somewhat spoiled now due to it's connection to LFC although I do enjoy seeing it sung at the start of their games. Same could be said about Bubbles and West Ham.

I think that you're spot on CAM. I do remember singing it at Millmoor but as a great song it has been ruined.

I used to love it when we sang New York New York but then Sinatra ruined it.

And both Everton and Watford have the Z-Cars theme, a show that was set in Kirkby which is very near Liverpool, don't know what the Watford connection is.

None really, the Watford manager at the time liked it so they played it. Watford went on a long unbeaten run after playing it so it was kept on as a good luck thing.

They are dropping it though and will use I’m still standing by Elton John

But that doesn't explain why Everton FC actually adopted the theme as their anthem. It is interesting to note that even amongst lifelong Evertonians and supporter groups there is even to this day no agreement of how or even when it was first played. One theory was that it was played as a tribute when the Z Cars cast attended a match. Others put forward other theories. The only thing that is beyond dispute is that the official anthem of Sheffield Wednesday FC should be "Pigs on the Wing".

Wasn't Z cars set in "Newtown" which supposed to be based on Liverpool, although I don't think many (any?) of the main characters (or even the criminals) had Scouse accents . Rather strange! Probably didn't do Scouse accents at RADA in those days
