How many have seen the Beatles live? Saw them at the Gaumont in Worcester in 1963. Didn't hear the first number because of the screaming. Apparently it was ' I saw her standing there'. Best live band - The Hollies. Saw quite a few of the sixties bands live including Manfred Mann, The Animals, Bee Gees, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Swinging Blue Jeans, Tremeloes, Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds, Ivy League, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames plus others. Worst live performance, Cat Stevens, flat as a pancake.
I think The Who died as a real edgy terrific live band when Moon died. I remember they were awful at Live Aid. Had some friends who saw them at Wembley a few weeks back complete with live orchestra and they said it didn’t work and a fair few were walking out. For anyone that hasn’t, it’s well worth reading up on Moon and what he got up to. It seems completely made up and exaggerated but it wasn’t. The stories about when he and Ollie Reed were drinking buddies will stick long in the mind. All these people such as Liam Gallagher who kept telling us they are the bad boys of rock simply have nothing close on this guy. A true on off
I have to agree that Keith Moon's boots were totally impossible to fill. He was totally unconventional and although some have tried, none have been able to mimic his style. Same with the late John Entwistle with that amazing bass style and sound. No group before or since has been composed of effectively four lead performers.
I always thought the Moon the Loon characterisation was bulled up somewhat. But after reading Tony Fletcher's book it is evident that it wasn't. It was much understated if anything.
My first concert was at Brum town hall. The Kinks, The Animals, The Pretty Things and Screaming Lord Sutch. I saw Georgie Fame at the Rum Runner when he his career had dwindled somewhat. I recall being able to walk right up next to him and stand there watching and listening. I felt a bit sorry for him having come to this.
There’s something special about seeing a band in their early days.
I saw Duran Duran in 81-82 at The Odeon in Brum supported by Talk Talk who had so few songs they sang “Talk, talk” two or three times.
I also saw OMD there in 82-83 and they were superb.
The Jam at Bingley Hall,Stafford in 81 is the most high octane and best “old school” live gig of my life.
For pure theatre and musical quality the best concert I’ve seen was Lady Gaga who was staggeringly good.
I saw Phil Collins in Perth,Australia earlier this year and although physically past his best it was a treat.
The Jam for me were tips though.
I do like the jam, and the new mod era,my son is the jam fanatic seen them countless times .and he always says once Weller found out he wasn’t the new Pete Townsend, they went from strength to strength.
I am currently reading ‘Dear Boy’, the life of Keith Moon, interesting, to say the least!
I can’t remember all the bands and performers that I have seen! I do remember Little Feat at Birmingham Odeon, though, what a band! I also saw Gene Vincent at Birmingham Town Hall and most recently, Sheryl Crow at the Symphony Hall and Albert Lee at The Stables.
Saw the Who at Mothers in Erdington just after Tommy had been released. Crazy night as more and more people were carried out with the heat including Moonie; he came back later after crowd had been halved. Mothers was mad location - on first floor via wooden staircase. Great night
Here is a number showing just how brilliant the original Who were. Mooney is magnificent, mistakes and all
