I've just written to Lincolnshire Fire Brigade
Dear Sir,
Chief fire officer Les Britzman said Fireman Sam would be replaced with fire extinguisher-shaped mascots called Freddy, Filbert and Penelope.
Assuming Freddy is to represent the male 'fireman' and Penelope the female is this inferring that anyone called Filbert may have questionable ***uality.
I'm deeply offended.
Yours faithfully,
Filbert Nutt

Not enough interest from women? Could that mean they might not be interested? Just a thought
Cartoon character names are usually alliterative - Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, etc. , although Fireman Sam isn't for some reason.
Freddie , Filbert and Fiona would have been more logical mascot names... or even Philomena. Penelope isn't really a good choice...
or Edward the Extinguisher, with Ethelred and Ermintrude
They don't seem to have thought through the details very well

Simon Spurt sort of fits but maybe too much like a 1970s **** star name
My Grandfather used to tell us the story of when he joined the Fire Service, sadly he only lasted one day. He was always quoting old adages and the one where you should fight with fire proved his downfall, he was dismissed on the spot.
