"I said to Tony [Owen's agent] the only way this is going to work and I go to Newcastle is if you get it in the contract that I can move to Liverpool for a certain amount that they are actually willing to pay now in a years time

"So I went to Newcastle with the caveat that I thought I was going back to Liverpool in a years time."

"Surely this was the best thing to do rather than staying in Madrid, with a world cup at the end of the year.

"It made me think is this move the best of a bad situation.

"This could have been anyone Nottingham Forrest, Hull, Birmingham any team, but I wanted to go back to Liverpool end of story, no matter what.
