Gordon Brown signed off on this, Ed Miliband supported it until he lost the election and is now against the proposed route through his constituency, Lib Dems are on board.

Only the Brexit Party and the Greens were fully against it in the last election.

You might be right but there are enough constituencies against it to have cut that big majority at the very least.

It knocks half of it down.

Yorkshire spur unlikely to be completed until 2035-2040 which is also a delay from 2031 as well as cost increases

Millers will be all conquering in Europe by then so it's a decent link to the Eurostar.
    All good, less whinging please

The chances of us playing in Europe and the Yorkshire spur of HS2 being built are roughly the same.

Is there a case for build it now rather than build it later? History would probably suggest the answer is yes if construction costs are anything to go by.

I took a look at 2 examples here in the US.

A floating bridge here in Seattle, originally built in 1963 at a cost of $24M ($206M in 2020 prices adjusting for inflation). Actual cost to rebuild $4.5B

A baseball park in Texas, originally built in 1994 for $191M ($329M in 2020 prices adjusting for inflation). Actual cost to build the new stadium $1.1B

Obviously the new bridge and stadium have additional 'bells and whistles' over the ones they replaced but does that justify the costs?

No English team will be part of Europe - we've left it - set up a GB Champions League

If a high speed rail link does appear in Yorks by say 2040 then it may be largely redundant because transportation technology may have changed significantly by then. The technology will certainly have changed by its payback period in 2140

Still it will boost the current share prices of major construction companies so another reason to stop moaning about it and be grateful
