Richard Branson on British Airways in 2009:
'We should wait for its demise.'
'Loss-making and inefficient airlines should be allowed to go the wall.'
'The Government should not intervene to stop companies going bust.'

    Seriously Alf? No!

Instead of the coronavirus crisis bringing a day of reckoning for tax-avoiding barstewards like Branson, COVID-19 is making eejits like him and his fellow tax dodging global crooks even more fu-cking shameless. No bailouts.

    Suck my dick!

    .

assume its for his half ownership of Virgin atlantic - but has an estimated worth of 5 billion....so let him fork out to keep his offshore shareholders happy - or perhaps he should hold off on his 2 billion worth of future plane/engine etc investments - sell an island even.

The perfect example of why you Lefties spend all your time in oppostion BT, you'd rather pursue a personal vendetta against a capitalist and capitalism in general, rather than save the jobs of thousands of ordinary people. And those ordinary people know how you lefties think, so they won't vote for you.

what I understand of the situation is that Branson has a personal fortune of 3.5-4.2 billion.

he has a 10% stake in Virgin Australia (also gone to the wall) and 51% interest in Virgin Atlantic.

He has had a tax haven for around 14 years on his Island.

The facts would say that a 1 billion Australian Government bailout was being considered on the basis that Australia do not want a one airline solution (QANTAS) as that would mean monopoly price fixing.

Anyhow, Australia has said no to a bailout and the figures suggest they are right with Virgin needing to service a huge debt just to keep afloat.

For Branson to dip into his fortune to keep the airline afloat would be crazy if you only owed 10% and 51% of Virgin Australia and Virgin Atlantic so I don't bag him for not doing so.

However, I would let it all work itself out without Government bailout on the certain knowledge that Virgin will fly again -but probably under a different banner.

Don't talk bloody daft sinkov. Branson and his mates talk about "survival of the fittest", yet fall back on the taxpayer as soon as the sh-it hits the fan. I don't recall you wanting to save thousands of miners jobs or wanting the government to bail out the remnants of British Steel?

I seem to recall (or perhaps someone else on here) mentioning a firm in Sheffield who were doing a marvellous job making specialist steel and saving a few jobs? Perhaps Branson could open a few record stores somewhere?

Shocking wasn't it what happened to those miners jobs BT, bloody Tories, evil witch Thatcher, and it was all planned for well in advance.

"The challenge from other fuels will not let up. It is only by going forward with its modernisation plan and concentrating on the most economic pits that the coal industry will be viable…In the next few years the number of miners will fall by 35,000 per year…The country cannot afford excessive protection for any of its industries if we are to compete in world markets, we must aim for cheaper energy. Over the last ten years the number of miners has been reduced from over 700,000 to under 400,000 an average fall of 30,000 a year"

B@stards, only 400,000 miners left and they were planning to lay the poor buggers off at a rate of 30,000 a year, they knew that in ten years time there'd only be 100,000 left, the industry would be dead on it's feet. Fecking Torys eh, fecking w@ankers, cruel, heartless b@stards, except this is from Labour's 1967 White Paper on Fuel, Thatcher was still an insignificant backbench Tory MP, it was 12 years before she became PM, but you Lefties never let the truth stand in the way of a good story do you BT, Wilson closed hundreds more pits than Saint Margaret ever did, but best keep that a secret eh.

Just tell me straight sinkov, do you want to give a billionaire £500 million to save his airline or should we invest in something a bit better, like an increase in social housing or our railways?

They certainly got cheaper energy sinkov. They are flagging motorists down outside our local ESSO and begging them to buy petrol.
