as an aside - she has alzeimers and virtually now lives constantly in the past - things see very real and recent to her.
she/they - her and my mam had a tough time - their dad died just as the war was starting, then within 6 months they were evacuated to whitehaven , before being brought back, they were both very clever but had virtually no schooling etc etc etc.
they weren't snowflakes that's for sure
Just been talking to my younger cousin, Fiona whose Dad was Arthur Gallagher, she was born just after the war and hadn't heard the story about her Dad I just told her. Arthur almost missed the rescue boat off the Dunkirk beaches going back looking for his mates only to find later they were already safely on the boat. That was typical of that man.
My Gran’s brother was in bomb disposal and was evacuated from Dunkirk. Grandad fought with Monty in Africa and in Greece where he was awarded an MBE.
She (Geordie lass born in Jesmond and lived in Gosforth for almost all her life) was in Torquay at the time and told me how she used to watch the Spitfires dog fighting over the Channel with the ‘hun’!
She passed away a couple of years back at he age of 101!
I think the stress and terror of those times is lost in all but the most recent war films. They were all heroes - each and every one.
Lest we forget.
My grandad hated Vera Lynn he was a marine who after fighting in Italy was on board a ship leaving Liverpool to go and fight in Japan.
Vera Lynn was on dock singing well meet again as they sailed off fto their certain deaths.
He always said “if I was stood next to her I would of strangled the bi tch!”
😆
They dropped the atomic bombs as he was halfway there and got to live a long and happy life 👍
Aye....it must be very odd (to say the least) to be watching stuff like that where you can actually remember being there and living through it.
To a lot of us, it's stuff we've only seen on telly and you can only guess at what it must have been like to live through it.
Puts the current situation into a bit of perspective in terms of selfish bastards complaining about the disruption to their lives.
