Those were the days Grist. As a youngster I remember the excitement building whenever we were on holiday (probably Scarborough, Brid and/or Yarmouth) and my Dad getting his copy of The Mirror to see if Chalky was in town. Don't think he ever was Those were the days when a fiver was a week's spending money on holiday.

Reminds me of the promotion many years ago from Daz washing powder when "a representative would be in your area" and all you had to do, if he called, was "answer a simple question and show a box of Daz" and you would win £10.

I was about 11 at the time and heard somebody was in our area. I made my mum buy a box of Daz powder (We were Persil people; she wasn't very happy) I waited in as much as I could and gave her strict instruction what to do when I was at school. When nobody was at home I even propped a box by the door so that it was visible through the glass panel. I left a note saying what I thought the answer was and to post the money through the letter box...

    He never came.

That marked the start of me becoming a little more hardened and cynical about promises...

Does the washing powder 'snobbery' still exist today? I remember we too were in the Persil camp and Daz/Omo was for the 'unwashed'

I'm glad somebody else remembers that blast from the past. My dad did exactly the same.

I remember putting stickers in the back of the car for Radio One or Hallam or something and you could get money or a prize if someone saw it but don't remember this.

Mid 60s to early 70s I'd say in my case along with the Beano and Dandy Summer Specials we got on holiday.

Later on it was more hoping to be where the Radio One road show would be and getting on to play Bits 'n' Pieces or Smiley Miley
