Not really 100% true though Exile. The Labour government 1964-70 ended free school milk in secondary schools. Thatcher stole the milk from the Primary schools. It was damn awful by the way. Warm and quite often curdled. I also remember when it snowed getting the bottle that the ice had lifted the silver top off..!

Nice read that letter and full credit to him. On a football perspective I believe Marcus Rashford will reach the very top of the game. A brilliant player capable of being world class. Am saying it nar- Thee watch what this guy does in an England shirt, he'll play a massive roll in our fortunes in the major tournaments if he stays injury free.

They haven't to my knowledge Jules but then again no governments ever paid me 80% of my wages to sit at home either for nearly 3 months .

Unprecedented times which I think is at the core of Rashford's letter to the government .

I’ve been off since March 3rd, fed up now...Totally.

I’m reading the story, and some more background. School meals has always been a hot potato. ( typed before I realised) . I remember at school the kids who got free meals had to go in front of the queue and be counted in before we were allowed in. Always thought that was a bit cr@p for them to be “Highlighted.
Seems a decent lad, His mums done a good job.
Although there’s the obligatory “as a black man from wythenshawe” in the letter..... needless really as we can see that he is.

Earlier on in the thread Animal posted a link & was accused of making the issue "political"
My experience is that I was one of those kids on free school meals
On a Monday morning our form teacher would start by collecting dinner money but that was preceeded by reading out the names of those on free dinners It's a stigma that lingers long in my memory & touches a nerve when raised & with some thought it perhaps could have been undertaken in a less demeaning way & perhaps it was of its time but to those of us on the receiving end it is more poignant & that's why it takes on a "political" edge
Just as a point of interest do you think Thatcher took the milk off Primary school kids because it may have been curdled or for some othrr reason?

Until the last comical sentence, I agreed with every word. But if she did then she should be praised for protecting millions and millions of kids from Campylobacter.

The post you replied to was reminiscence of my childhood, it was called sharing. Sharing my thoughts at the time on the “shame” these kids felt. Everyone can “share Concern for others” not limited Just to Labour supporters.

    I never mentioned Labour
Unless you were on the receiving end of this stigma you can't know just like us whites can't know what it's like to be black & when Rashford states that he is from Wythenshawe & black you dismiss it out of hand

One of the biggest cases of attaching stigma in fairly recent times was made by Blair and New Labour to single mothers .

I seem to remember they reduced their benefits and it caused quite a shyte storm at the time .

This was at a time before programmes such as Benefits Britain and Benefit Street were made and demonised a small amount of people whilst convincing a large proportion of people in to believing everyone on benefits is a scrounger .

During the decade of austerity there were 120k more deaths recorded than they'd been the previous decade , it's generally accepted that such a rise in the death rate shouldn't happen in this day and age , pre pandemic , with people generally living longer now .

Nobody seems to want to make a documentary or a series on tv about that .

Television these days don’t really wan to make stuff like that..... it’s gone, in the past, not enough sensationalism/ of “Today” to rise people up.
They only want to make Reality shows, “Two quid to enter” shows that lure vulnerable young families and women at home into coughing up multiple £2 entries to win a kiss from Andi Peters. It’s lucky that only people who can afford to put food on the table for their kids actually enter these things, or we’d be in trouble!

The real truth about the UK is that it's a low tax , low skilled economy for the most part .

Too many people live pay cheque to pay cheque and when something goes wrong , sickness perhaps , the car packs up etc etc then it gets extremely difficult , there's very little margin for the downside in life today .

To have any kind of decent financial life you need two decent wages coming in , my mam never worked until both myself and my sister left school and we could manage on my old mans earnings , we weren't loaded but we didn't go without either , far from it .

They wouldn't have done it today .

Schools are not only about education they are child minders too with both parents having to work .

Society has drastically changed over the last fourty years .
