The Nottingham labour Councillors couldn’t manage the proverbial pee up in a brewery - total shambles!!!
Before posters slag off the entire council, look at what is said about the present leadership and executive. Clearly, the present council is the victim of historical bad judgements.
The Tories have pinched local government to the point of collapse, trying to force them into taking unpopular cuts while keeping Westminster as 'the good guys'.
There is so much wrong at the heart of this country and the mess that is Brexit is about to relegate us to even lower.
The Nottingham labour Councillors couldn’t manage the proverbial pee up in a brewery - total shambles!!!
Can’t disagree with any of that.
What also seems to be true is that the government are purposely starving mostly labour councils of central funding. Funding which was short before covid and which has only been made worse by the pandemic.
Why they’d do that when it means cuts to ***** services only they could tell you, but it’s obviously always a key feature of Tory election campaigns to paint Labour as financially incompetent. I’m sure the government wouldn’t be as cynical as that though.
They've obviously been managed badly financially for some time. But two other factors are also worth bearing in mind:
1) They've now suffered £120m in funding cuts from central government since 2013
2) So many of the money generating assets they do have, have been particularly badly affected by covid:
- Motorpoint Arena: No gigs
- Theatre Royal: No theatre
- Buses and trams: Dramatically reduced footfall
- Gyms and leisure centres: Closed for months
In the light of the above you can see why investing in something all-year-round to generate revenue like an energy company would seem like a good idea. But clearly they buggered it up.
Must be careful in this reply as not my first hand knowledge, only remarks made to me by a retired ex employee of the Nottinghamshire County Council after the collapse of Robin Hood Energy. For ump**** years Jon Collins was leader of the City Council and in all that time as leader he was somehow able to make sure the Council's books were never audited each year. Strangely he resigned from the Council three months before RHE went bust.
As the report stated, too many inexperienced council wallahs put in senior positions helping to run council owned companies, be it Labour or Tory representatives without enough business experience. Ah well folks .... nowt we can do about it eh!
