I do remember very early starts to get anywhere and horrendous traffic jams usually on the A38

Rhyl, just after the war with my Nanny and Nandad Holder![]()
I cannot remember the very first holiday venue as I was a toddler but I do remember being totally petrified of the sand on my feet and screamed blue murder when mom and dad tried to get me to stand on the beach. But the first venue I can remember I was four years old and we had a week at Llandudno. My dad realised there were mice in the mattress him and mom were sleeping on but he kept quiet about it until after the holiday as mom would have been hysterical and would have wanted to go home.
Probably Lynton/Lynmouth or Looe. Then Colwyn Bay and the first one I can clearly remember at Goodrington.
Mine was a never to be forgotten holiday to Skegness. The chalet was metered and parents had run out of change so when we went to bed they used candles for light which then burnt the bases and we all woke up with the room on fire. They managed to douse the flames but spent the next 3 days of a 6 day holiday redecorating the fire damage in order to get back their deposit.
The night before we were woken at 3am by dummy bombs exploding nearby which were dropped by jets who were on exercises from the nearby air base. It lasted a good hour, it was terrifying to hear them explode I knew what it must have felt like during the war
Our trip to Butlins at Bognor was a nightmare from a sleeping point of view.
Severe sunburn.
A very small and humid room all four of us were in.
Loads of ****agers in the rooms above us partying and getting p I s s e d all night with load music and virtually no sleep.
In those days Butlins fed people like cattle in huge halls.....the best thing was plates getting smashed and the huge cheer that went up from the hundreds of us sat eating together.
It seems so primitive now but back in 72 it felt like luxury.
I loved their swimming pools with the glass on the bottom and sides which allowed you to interact with people walking outside.
A p a e d o s paradise in reality 👀🤭
Looking back on it it wasn’t even One Star ⭐️ in terms of quality.
Caravan site at Lydstep Avon so we could alternate between Tenby and Saunsdersfoot. Highlight of the week was a boat trip to Caldy island with a bit of mackerel fishing on the way. From about 10 onwards we went upmarket to Padstow, happy days indeed.
