As a former goalkeeper, albeit only at a local level, I do honestly believe that there are occasions when 'keepers could comfortably catch the ball. Too many times I've seen them palm the ball away two handed when it would have been just as easy to catch it. I realise that the balls are lighter and move more but it doesn't alter my opinion. I firmly believe that this type of play all started with the introduction of the foreign goalkeepers into our game. Even before the lighter ball they punched or palmed the ball away rather than catching it.

Regarding Johnstone, yes he has been excellent for us this season but as I've stated before, he does have his weaknesses. He does seem rooted to his line on occasions plus his communication with his defenders needs attention. His distribution also could improve. As for the England spot, I feel that there isn't a great deal between the four of them. It's a position we used to be very strong in but with the introduction of the overseas players, not any more.

Sam's improved on his previous two seasons. That notwithstanding I still feel that shot stopping aside other areas of his game really let him down.

He's probably faced less crosses and more shots this season which highlights his strengths but the weaknesses are still there.

Positioning, footwork, effective communications, taking decisive and effective responsibility for 'his' six yard box.

He's had some very good games when he's looked the real deal. By that I mean he's claimed crosses, taken the heat of his defenders and not pushed the ball from saved shots directly in front of him.

Mixed bag of a keeper for me whose proximity to the England squad highlights the dearth of technically gifted goalkeepers in the English game.

The plus to any England squad place is that it adds pounds to his name. I don't mean to be disrespectful, especially in light of what's in front of him at the Albion, but I don't get the love in.

He may well go on to be the keeper he can be but he's currently not the level of keeper some suggest him to be now. That said he's our goalkeeper and I wish him every good fortune.

A good analysis much of which I agree with, particularity your observation on the introduction of overseas keepers, something I have made reference to many times. A big problem is the young generation see and try to emulate this style of goalkeeping. For me, making the save and retaining the ball is the greatest of feelings and it obviously does not provide the opposition the opportunity to pick up on the lose ball.

I was trying to help a young’n this past weekend and was at pains to get him to catch the ball rather than palm away. He got it quite quickly and was soon catching rather that palming. Goalkeeping is specialized and it is so easy to criticise but Sam Johnston’s has not played at this level because he is not good enough.

To be honest, all Albion keepers have been strongly criticised by fans, Carson was given a very hard time as was Foster (as much as he was loved) and so now is Sam Johnstones’ turn.

One last thing of note, a defense can be wary and lack confidence in the keeper behind them but the the reverse can also be applied and with the defense we have had this season, I reckon Sam Johnstone might well be lacking in confidence of the players in front of him.

Absolutely Bmg buddy. We have the worst defence in the league...and oddly an England call-up keeper?
I am of the opinion that he is only too aware of our central defending weaknesses and that has undoubtedly had an influence on his 6 yard box performance.
I’m pleased he got his call up rewarding his performances.

Congratulations to Sam for his England squad call up. Shame about some others that have been left out, Bamford and Ings should be in, not Sako, Calvert-Lewis, or Lingard. I wouldn’t put Watkins ahead of Bamford either. Oh well, I shan’t be watching it anyway!
