Continuing with the unrelated motorbike tales, I started out with a Honda CB50J that I used to ride to and from sixth form that, whilst looking like a proper bike, had a four stroke engine and the power of a Flymo lawnmower.
I upgraded to a CB250ND as the 125cc law was about to be introduced (showing my age!) before becoming the seventh (!) owner of a BMW R80/7 - the twin 800cc favoured by plod back in the day - that was nicknamed Adolph.
Not been on a bike in the best part of 25 years now. Might be time to get another…
Bikes can certainly be dangerous as can cars - when living in central York owning a car was a waste of time plus expensive street resident parking permits so I got a scooter.
The Can Am Spyder trike was a compromise when I came over to Brittany.I only use it locally as all main roads in France have a limit of 50 mph,so I never go on 60 mph dual carriageways and if wet I get the bus.Mum had bike reservations but Dad got me learning to use it safely particularly the trike turning techniques which requires more physically leaning into bends which was different to my previous 150cc scooter riding experience. Its got a semi automatic transmission which makes riding it easier.
The roads over here have great surfaces & not really busy but Mum made me walk/run/bicycle on them to appreciate all danger aspects before the Can Am trike arrived.Funny how some Dads in their 50's go get a bike.My Dad always wanted a motorcycle and got that wish aged 55 - so it's an experience that's worth considering for sure in finding a a bike that your comfortable with to ride.

OK, at the risk of being labelled (something), I declare as being a Harley Davidson owner. I entirely agree with MT as to the roads in France as being of a better surface quality and traffic volumes of considerably lower volume. Travel by bike on the Cherbiurg peninsulas is a delight compared to the trip from here to Portsmouth to get the ferry!
Respect for Mr WTF !
Beautiful bike & beautifully turned out with attentions to all details as well.
One question as in those White wall tyres - how many miles did you get out of them as they can be heavy on the wallet I'm told.
Cost about €500 a set of White walls here in France for decent touring ones.
Done 45k, and on three sets of white walls (originally Dunlops then moved to Avon's, less "blocky" tread than you see in the picture, less likely to get hooked up in gaps in the tarmac), cost about the same cost here as you suggest.
