Even the post gave all 9's.

Notts County made the perfect start to their National League season as a double from Ruben Rodrigues helped the Magpies to a thumping 5-0 win at Barnet.

Ian Burchnall's side dominated the clash at the Hive as Callum Roberts and Rodrigues came close to scoring only to be denied by goalkeeper Sam Sargeant.

Goalkeeper Sam Slocombe then had to make a fine save to deny Mason Bloomfield in what was the Bees' only real opportunity in the opening 45 minutes.

But after the break, Notts finally turned their dominance into goals when Dion Kelly-Evans teased a lovely cross into the box for Rodrigues to head into the corner.

And just moments later he made it 2-0 when he converted a well-worked set-piece routine from Matt Palmer which sparked delirium in the away end.

Callum Roberts then added a third from the spot which earned Josh Doherty a red card after fouling the winger when he was clean through on goal.

And to wrap up a memorable afternoon, substitute Jim O' Brien squared unselfishly for Kyle Wootton to grab the fourth.

Sam Slocombe: made a terrific save in the first half as he tipped Mason Bloomfield's shot around the post. That was the only time he was seriously tested. Showed good hands throughout. 9

Dion Kelly-Evans: Did brilliantly for the goal with a terrific cross to pick out Rodrigues. Picked up some great positions and dovetailed well with Cal Roberts. 9

Richard Brindley: The former Rotherham defender oozed quality in carrying the ball up the pitch from a central defensive position. And showed good awareness when Barnet were on the attack. 9

Connell Rawlinson: Big and strong in the air and very rarely looked in trouble. Played in the middle of the back three and did all that was asked of him. 9

Kyle Cameron: Like Brindley was very good coming with the ball out of defence and seems so at home in the way Ian Burchnall wants to play. 9

Joel Taylor: Got up and down the left-hand side superbly and was a really good outlet. Had he caught his volley better in the opening minutes, he could have scored. 9

Ed Francis: Did a solid job of screening the back three but caught the eye with some wonderful passes in the second half and looked a real class act. 9

Matt Palmer: Plenty of industry and endeavour as Barnet did their best to deny him space and time to operate perhaps realising the quality he possesses, but he was excellent in the second half. 9

Callum Roberts: The away end fizzed with anticipation whenever he got the ball and with good reason. Got into some great positions but couldn't apply the finishing touch. 9

Ruben Rodrigues: Came so close to a wonderful goal when his 25-yarder looked destined for the top corner until the keeper made a terrific save. Conjured up a majestic header and produced a great finish for the second. 9

Kyle Wootton: Same old story for the striker who was done no favours by the referee despite some questionable challenges. Did a lot of unselfish work and was rewarded with a goal. 9

Jim O'Brien (Rodrigues 65): Showed how unselfish he is as he ran clean through and teed up Wootton. Superb. 9

Adam Chicksen (Rawlinson 80): Came on and helped Notts preserve their clean sheet in the final 10. 9

Surprising. I would have expected 11s and 12s as a minimum on there!

I would have given slightly higher marks but I had to keep them in check cos Barnet were pretty awful or we made them look very very ordinary by being so good.

It was a pretty special away day, one of my very best. I doubt we've scored 5 goals in a half of football too often in our history.

I thought he wanted to head the ball, but couldn't get more than 1.5 inches off the ground. And I agree with you, RR has to be worth more than £250K. I'd like it to remain moot, while we build a team that he's still part of even at the top of L2 and possibly beyond, but maybe I'm jumping a bit far ahead.

Is RR not out of contract this season? Also £250k for a NL is quite a lot, what do you think his market value is?

Maybe next week if we put in the same level of performance against Torquay. And if we beat Wrexham, I fully expect him to go all Norwegian on us (“Deadpool, guy from ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, your guys took a hell of a beating…”).
