Because I could only get to matches when the match bus ran from Hednesford, I couldn’t get to any Youth games until I was old enough to drive, or more accurately until me mate got his 3 wheel reliant Robin which was in 1968.

We were lucky enough to follow the side regularly from the great run in 1968/69 until the early 70s.

For me the difference between then and now was when you saw the likes of Asa Hartford, Len Cantello, Jim Holton, Alistair Robertson, Lyndon Hughes, and later the likes of Bryan Robson and Derek Statham to name but a few, you could tell even at say 17 that they were good enough then to be playing for the first team.

Last night was the first time I have seen the under 23s for a full game, having previously seen most of the highlights on the club site.

I have to say for me there was not one player I could honestly say stood out so much that you could not understand why they weren’t at least in the squad. The better players in that team are already around the first team squad. The only one who did surprise me was the goalkeeper Ted Cann who I though was extremely good. We seem to be awash with young inexperienced goalies at the moment. I also thought Taylor and Nguepissi were very solid at the heart of defence.

How many will play Saturday? Don’t know. If it was to get us into the play offs I wouldn’t start with any of them. As there is nothing on it can’t see any issue with giving Fellows a start as well as Gardner-Hickman. Would start Ashworth as well but others on the bench for me.

We need to get them playing more from the start of matches nest season though. They won’t get any better if they don’t get experience.

Good and experienced review Yarm buddy, particularly in light of your history following the youth games and your comparison with earlier years.

You now meet Wolves in the final. It will probably be a better game than watching either of our respective first elevens at the moment.

Where’s the final ring played Abbo?

    Should attract a decent crowd.

I seem to remember Derek Statham’s youth side of 75-76 beat Wolves in front of about 13,000 at our place?

Officially we had 15,613 at our place for the first leg of the Youth final in April 1969. We won 3-0 and then lost the second leg at Roker Park 6-0 after Asa Hartford and Jim Holton were both sent off!

Below are the details of the two sides for this final which we won 5-0 on aggregate with a 2-0 home victory.

I can't find any attendance details but my ancient memory is good and I think it was 13,700 or thereabouts.

There's some great pictures if you Google of the winning dressing room that night, Derek Statham......WHAT a player he was.
