Smart Stupid People; the most dangerous thing in the world. This is our political class in a nutshell. They can't define a woman and now Biden admin is changing the definition of a recession from 2 quarters of neg growth to God knows what! Control the language and MAKE REALITY WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO BE AND ALL THE PROBLEMS GO AWAY! Is it not great living in the smart stupid world? Oh and also no accountability as it's NEVER your fault when the screw up arrives on the scene as the media etc will bale you out and gaslight for you.

It's time we gave some other lot a go because if this lot make it any worse God only knows where it will all end.
Something like this should a apolitical with a consensus that does not change with the Government. Both major parties are as bad as each other in their attempts to score points off each other.

Therein lies a massive problem for long term planning. Without a commitment to a consensus, the country is farting in the wind in its attempts to deal with these issues.

People are basing their fears on nuclear power technology of the 1970’s. The industry has developed in the fifty years and should be viewed in that light.

New technologies need to be developed on a private finance basis as necessary and that means abandoning opposition to private ownership, but it also means abandoning opposition to nationalisation if it is essential and in the people’s best interests to avoid the scandals perpetrated by the water companies, for example, and to take them into public ownership when up and running.

There also needs to be cross party consensus on subsidising essential industries to spread the burden, a commitment that isn’t subject to political whims and fancies.

Finally there needs to be cross party consensus on investment in the industries - not simply a way of generating dividends for the Government. Infrastructure upgrades and new technology should be guaranteed.

A few thoughts from a consensus, proportional representation based Switzerland.

Spot on mon ami, I couldn't have put it better myself. Fall-back/default, call it what you like, but that's the way I see it.

I'm not quite sure why you have a problem with this, in virtually every area you moan about, lockdowns, vaccine passports, booster jabs, energy security, border control, Brino, eco loonery, the government position, whilst abject, is closer to yours (and mine) than it would be had we either a Labour or LibDem government.

We have referendums on all major issues such as migration,LGBT in schools etc Swiss. It is the democratic way in my opinion and the EU hate the results.

The UK only gets 3% of it's oil and gas from Russia.
Problem is that the war in Ukraine affects global prices so we have to pay top dollar from whoever we buy from (mainly Norway)
The key is energy independence and sadly, most of our oil and gas was sold off by Thatcher to pay for a stupid war on the other side of the Atlantic to prop up her failing government so we'll never get it back.
Our only route to energy independence is to supplement our remaining oil and gas with nuclear (half our nuclear plants have reached end of life) and alternative sources like offshore windfarms and - and this is an open goal - wave power. We're an island FFS and if we can't see our way to sort it with wave power we are even more stupid than I already think we are.
Whatever we do, we need a massive amount of investment but Sunak has already pawned the house and there's no way any government will bite the bullet and raise taxes by 5% or more to pay for what we need.

Maybe they could raise the money from elsewhere Wander , ie they could all stop swindling the system and not give themselves pay rises that no one can contest / control, also if we stopped spunking 5 million a day on hotels and immigration issues to keep them all happy here we may have a solution to subsidising or paying for improvements to creating energy,

The whole thing is bull **** at the minute I mean who cares when Rishi s next live debate is , we can’t have any control into who is elected as leader of the party anyway- so why Tv chooses to show it is beyond me.

They have literally ripped the Conservative party apart in this debacle and ended up with worse representation than they had with Boris but it goes back to the me me me greed mentality as always - they’ll get a chance to look back at some point , maybe they’ll realise how they handed the country back over to a Labour government that is more conservative than its ever been but way behind the conservative government we have now.

I dread to think of the consequences

It is the same in Switzerland, CIB. We have regular referendums on a whole range of issues. The people set the agenda and have a very active say in what matters to them.

Britain suffers from its system of “first past the post”, with a Government focused on not what is good in the long term, but what might get them re-elected after five years. The people, in the meantime, have no say in what happens and, due to the system, are governed by a Government that the majority of the electorate do not support.

I love it, I can always rely on the Loony Left to brighten up my day. So the fact that the lights will be going out in 2023 is the fault of a Prime Minister who left office in 1990, 30 odd years ago ? It's numerous decisions taken, or not taken, since 1990, the policy obsession with windmills and solar power, the neglect of nuclear, whilst totally ignoring security of supply, that has led us inexorably to where we are today.

Nevertheless I'm sure this latest denigration of his Aunty Margaret will have had our other resident Loony Lefty BT, chortling over his cornflakes.
