What was the magic ingredient we had back then that we don't have anymore?
Bob the butcher's money and Potts as manager.
Went downhill pretty quick when Jimmy Adamson replaced Potts and boldly claimed Burnley would be "the team of the seventies" - and promptly got you relegated. Your development structure was top class in the 60s but as is always the case, the best players move on. By the seventies, Man Utd were already starting to get the best young prospects.

We won the FA youth cup with the likes of Docherty and Kindon, so as usual a Notlob gets it all wrong Lusty.

Whatever money Bob Lord had, the players didn't see any of it. While there was the maximum wage we could compete, when that was abolished we couldn't, it took a few years but our youth system and D1 future was doomed from the moment of that 1961 decision. Thanks to Lord we survived longer in D1 than all the other Lancashire town clubs, but even Bob couldn't keep us up forever.

Spot on Sinkov. As soon as it all became about money the town based family orientated football club was sacrificed for the monopoly we now have in the Premier league and just how boring is the premier league really. Billionaire club number 1 vs billionaire club no 2 etc; with obscene wages to go with it all. How long before there is a £500,000 a week player!??? They killed the spirit of the beautiful game.

Nope. Don't think I'll be rising to that nonsense BT.

The big change in youth set ups was when clubs like Manure started taking on 100s of kids a year - which eventually expanded across the world - and then having a brutal filter system.

There is simply no point in the likes of Arsenal, United and City hoovering up all of the best kids Lusty because they can only play 11 at a time.

I have sad for a long time the FA need to set a quota on the amount of scholars one club can take on board at a time. Five about right?

My Saints supporting mate is questioning Ralph Hasenhüttl's sanity. It went along the lines of "WTF is this eejit doing letting our "Star Boy" go out on loan to f*cking Burnley?

In youth development all clubs have a filter system, the youngsters are constantly monitored and evaluated then a decision made, you're either in or you're out. What's brutal about that, it is what it is. Sadly the overwhelming majority are out, but there is no way round that and it was ever thus, even when we were unearthing gems every year in the 50s and 60s, the vast majority were still shown the door as ****agers and left to make their own way in the footballing world.

The system works BT, Trippier, Mee and McNeill were spewed out by the Manchester clubs 'brutal' filtering systems, didn't do any harm to their careers did it ?
