Don't think the likes of Manning would succeed nowadays, too may "fragile" egos, seems Roy Chubby Brown is finding it hard to make his tours work, having dates cancelled because he might offend someone

I saw Bernard Manning at his Embassy Club in Manchester circa 1985 (School trip) he was ruthless I was warned beforehand not to go to the toilet or face his wrath, a guy got up to go, Manning stops his act, stares at him with disgust and then rips him apart verbally. I am sat on one side of the club with a knot tied in a certain part, trying to keep a low profile; Manning looks over at me 'Don't worry you big Barsteward I've spotted you and I'll get back to you.' It didn't matter who you were you were abused.

I too saw him at Boothstown British Legion club when I lived over there in 1983, as you say he was ****ing ruthless nobody dared move when he was doing his schpeel - One idiot did get up, got the verbals and idiotically tried to give some back.... didn't end well, the geezer ended up getting chucked out when he tried to get onto the stage to belt Bernard!
Though he wouldn't get anywhere in today-s woke snowflaky world - just as with Chubby - I nearly wet myself laughing at his stuff, disgusting, Homophobic, Mysigonestic, Racist filth, but to a twenty five year old out with his mates and full of beer ohhh so ****ing funny --- cant belly laugh like that at anything you see on "The last Leg" et al these days

Chubby wasn't allowed on stage in Preston, not sure who he had upset but he was out of favour here. Jim Bowen could be a good night but occasionally was naff too, very clean compared to others listed here - cleanest was Ken Dodd.
