Haha BT. I don't go for "wellness" check-ups because I know how I feel and check my own blood pressure regularly and don't have cause to go to the GPs.
However, as you correctly surmised, they try to meet targets in order to obtain financial bonuses. I can't see that they get punished, rather that they don't get more money coming into their coffers, which they possibly would have if they had more 'coughers'
I used to have regular checks on blood samples because I am taking a tablet to keep my blood pressure in check. About 6 years ago, I went in for the results and was told that I was going to be put on Statins. I said that my cholestrol wa fine and that I did not need statins so refused their 'offer' --I was told that the government want everyone above a certain age on statins, however, I told them that I would not be prescribed statins. Mentioned this to my daughter-in-law, who is a GP elsewhere, and she advised that they would benefit financially the more people that they could get onto statins.
Six months later, attended for the next results and, without giving me the results, I was told that I was Type 2 Diabetic and prescribed Metformin which went straight down the toilet. Six months later, I attended and was told that the tablets must be working well because I was not on the scale! I advised that I had not taken the tablets and wa doing nothing different at all. I received all the things that they offer diabetics, eye tests, foot care etc. and this continued for over 3 years until a new practice nurse asked me why I was attending the diabetic department because I had NEVER been on the scale for Type 2 diabetes. She then took me off the listtwo and a half years ago. I still receive invites to attend eye-screening, in spite of my having told them that I am not diabetic. They advised that they had contacted my GP who said that I was in remission! Bottom line is that my daughter-in-law advised that practices were getting financial bonuses for people who were diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic.
All I ever think about is the constant waste of money involved with things like this. My other daughter-in-law and my grandson are both Type 1 Diabetic and need all the help that they can get, however, they try to waste money on a 76 year old who is more than happy to get on with life and never worries about anything. Bloody ridiculous.
Here endeth the lesson!
