100% Yes, it’s a specialist position, there’s enough versatility in the squad to cover outfield injuries, the risk of injury is low but not worth it, but I’m pretty sure we won’t have one on the bench though.

My initial thought was no - but that was based on what I think will happen. If I was Head Coach (heaven forbid) I would have a keeper as I’m generally risk averse and as per other comments we can more easily cover outfield positions. Not a lot between Mair and Brooks IMO so went for Brooks as I trust he would step up and if not needed it would benefit us in the future for him to have the experience of being involved in a Wembley final squad.
Yes and make it Archie, he has form when it comes to saving pens if it went that far
I went for Brooks too. I've got nothing against Archie Mair, but it irks me a bit that 'one of our own' is being pushed into the shadows again by a loanee from another club. Brooks did absolutely fine when he covered for Slocombe during March and I see no reason why he shouldn't be the official back-up.
Seems obvious to say yes for a game of this magnitude with the potential for a pen shoot out, but substitutions are a huge part of a manager's game plan and toolset in the modern era and you also have to factor in extra time.
I would bow to the manager's decision and accept that the keeper getting injured - or that it will go to pens - is less likely than the need for a full set of outfield players being required, if that's what he decides is best.
100% yes.
It wont be for saving penalties though as I'd imagine we would use the 3 subs before 120 minutes in.
Its about time that 5 subs + a GK was introduced in the National League
You can use 4 subs if the game goes to extra time and I agree it is unlikely that the keeper gets injured but I wouldn’t risk our whole season on that it is only a few weeks ago S****horpe took Slocombe out and we had to bring a keeper on in 20-25th minute.
If that happened tomorrow that would be a nightmare I think we will go with a keeper.
Got me wondering who was the first sub keeper to be used by Notts.
In the league at least, it was James Lindley away to Cardiff City on 18th September 1999 after Darren Ward was stretchered off with Cardiff controversially scoring with Ward injured in the build-up.
The sub keeper had first been introduced for season 1993/94, this being in addition to the existing two subs on the bench rule. So we went six seasons without having to use the sub-keeper option.
Can't say I remember seeing Notts use an outfield player in goal at Meadow Lane before that, though David Hunt had to go in goal at Doncaster 1985/86 season after the late Ian Hesford got himself sent off and I think Darren Davis also ended up in goal somewhere or other.
