I had a Man Utd strip with ‘Coppell’ on the back but I had no real interest in football at all, until I caught the game on the box 40 years ago today.

An 8 year old glory hunting weegie pr1ck

Great stories everyone, keep 'em coming!

My first game wouldn't have arrived for another 12 years at that point :/

Forever jealous of anyone who experienced it.

Went over on my motorbike. Had my newly wed Brother in Law oin the back. ( My Sister forewent a Honeymoon to let him go. True dandie !! )

Harwich , met a bunch in a 2CV enroute too. We all ended up at same campsite . First Dons there I suspect , sunday ?

Gothenberg was affa affa quiet until the St Clair arrived. Then, BEDLAM !!

Stayed out at all night after the match. Firstly in the posh Hotel where all the Teams Wiifes stayed. Underground Disco there, with Drew Jatvie up at the D.J. making him play European song every second tune. Then wandered round lots of rooms. Endinig up in Frank Gilfeathers room , party in full swing. Sat down right next to Ian St John, in a mellow mood. Hey, d`ye ken fa I am min ?? " Oh, it`s you ?? Always wanted to meet you pal" he replied. All mellow , like !! Fine mannie.

Strayed off to some wee disco that was open till daybreak. Wandered around looking for a bus back to the campsite, got hijacked by a Swedish Wifey on her way to cook breakfasts for a hotle full of Real fans. So why not, off to breakfast. ( Still in the redboilersuit I nicked from somewhere. Don`t ask !! )

Finally got back to the campsite , to find a drookit Brother in law waiting for me to fire up the bike and catch the boat to Denmark, for return journey. Man, it was a struggle. Did it though, and spent next day till dark hours in hurling rame crossing Denmark to Esjberg for boat neat day . Campsite Mannie was so sorry with the sight of us, he gave us a cabin to dry out for same price as a tent pitch.

Next day boat to Newcastle. Stopped off for Football Focus in some country pub. Then hammered up the road. Was riding round Dundee on the Saturday . But just wanted home by that time.

First away, last home....and DROOKIT !!!

( Oh aye, we got our picture with my bike on the fornt cover of that E.E. special innaw !! COYR )

Happy Gothenburg 40th to all Dandies today and particularly those who were there on that historic night.

I too was but a nipper in ‘83 and have had to live in envy of the generation(s) that were old enough to experience that amazing achievement at the time. As the years go by we all realise the magnitude of that victory in Gothenburg and while nothing is impossible it looks increasingly unlikely that anyone of us will witness anything equal to that again.

That's excellent. Makes my trip of flight from Stanstead and then a hotel look positively tame (though we did drink the hotel dry and one friend who'd travelled from Hull by ferry said he'd go back to the ferry and get his booze...unfortunately the taxi driver wouldn't wait at the ferry and he couldn't remember the name of the hotel...so he got drunk and the other 5 kipped down in my hotel room).
