If McGoldrick does what Hughsie did when he was in the latter stage of his career I’ll be elated!

Had to check but I last time I saw McGoldrick play in a Notts shirt was in 2005, when we lost 4-0 at Grimsby. Not surprisingly neither he nor anyone else impressed and he’s never really impressed me since, but what Sheff U and Derby fans have said have got me thinking we’ve got the real deal.

Would have loved to see Ruben play for us in the EFL though.

If given the chance to reverse the situation, who would take it?

I would in an instance. Hope to be proven wrong over the course of the season.

Replacing 34 goal contributions, plus countless more where RR did the hard job to set up the assister....that's a hard act to follow.
But all of this is not fair on Didzy, he's not a direct, like-for-like replacement.

Like I said it's a horrible yet beautiful question. If Ruben was always going to go in his mind, then we have a superb attacking replacement. One better than I would ever have imagined possible in the short term.

Would I have preferred Ruben to sign a 2 year new contract , of course for ££££ reasons as much as anything. But in the circumstances, based on last season we have a clear upgrade.

I wouldn't reverse the situation, if given the chance. RR wanted away for fame and fortune McGoldrick chose his boyhood club over fortune. Plus of course he is proven at levels above the one we find ourselves in.

In a perfect world , I would have liked both, but this world is far from perfect.

I think this is the key thing about Reuben - all of those assists and defence-splitting passes that led to goals (thinking here of the pass to Matty Palmer for the winner against Wrexham, but there were so many). Do we already have players who can replace him - Sam Austin, Jodi Jones - or do we still need to sign someone? My feeling is the latter, though I am a big SA fan.

Ruben had proved himself in the National League, McGoldrick had proved himself in top 3 Lagues, so not a hard decision to pick McGoldrick

Highly recommend watching last season's Derby highlights on youtube to get a bead on the McG we're likely to get. I'd say it's highly likely he'll be an absolute GIANT for us next season and wouldn't it be a great fairy tale ending for him?

    * just look at the brizzle game vid I posted on the McG thread for eg.

Didzy wasn't just poaching goals in L1 last season, he was setting others up, heading off the line, dinking cbs, and slamming shots in from all angles and the edge of the box. On that form, he'll scare the chit out of L2 defences. And in the worst case, leaving what amout of space for Macca, SA et al?

The floating variables: will Didzy's 'legs go', was Rodders head turned, or did he run out of steam, are all fair game for speculation.

THey're quite different players, so not really helpful to compare them head to head, imo. RR achieved Harkouk levels of GOAT at Notts IMO, and his overall contribution to Notts/THE UNDENIABLES should never be denied!!!

Lots of love forever for Rodders and that doesn't depend on how Didzy does.

My money is on McG becoming the absolute Notts star of his/our dreams Partly because of him, and partly because with LW's tactical nous, and this Notts setup behind him, he'll have every chance to finish his career in STYLE

For me, the question of who was/is best out of Rodrigues v McGoldrick depends on the formation we play.

I liked Rodrigues as one of two attacking midfielders in a three-man midfield, or on the left of a front three, but I thought he was pretty average as a supporting striker in a front two. He's a very good creative, attacking, goalscoring midfielder rather than a natural striker.

So, if we're going to play 3-5-2 a lot next season, then I'd say McGoldrick is the far more natural strike-partner for Langstaff or Scott, and therefore better than Rubes for that particular role.
