Of he had 2 years on his contract and we asked for a decent fee, Luton wouldn't have bought him. I suspect they have picked him up as a freebie, very decent wages more with a plan to strengthen the squad for their return to the championship next year. I suspect he'll have very little involvement next year other than bit parts from the bench although I hope for Chio he gets more and does well.

So with that in mind your question doesn't make much sense. But in spirit of answering your question, if he had 2 years on his contract and made it clear he wanted to go, therefore we sold to best bidder, I suspect he would have brought about 1 million to a mid table championship club. I don't think anyone would pay more.

But we haven't lost money. He wouldn't sign again for us so he did his bit in keeping us in the league and earned his move. Good luck to him.

Looks to me like the general MM council determined that the bet was on and you lost?

We have lost money as he went on a freebie

They paid 1.5 million to barnsley for there striker who isn't a international and scored 15 goals in a promotion winning team.

    Want to reevaluate

Derby was 16-1 to win the league which guru wanted yet was 6-1 to get promoted which he wouldn't take the bet on.

As another poster said why would I bet £10 with guru at evens when I could get 16-1 and donate to charity.

Also why didn't guru accept the 6-1 onto get promotion which I was offering.

If we were a bigger club who had paid bigger wages last year, and he had been as good as he has regardless, then I'd estimate between 5-7 million.

In reality, he helped keep us up which has paid us back - quite literally.

He had a 4 yr contract and wanted a new challenge. Maybe if he was 30+ he would have signed a new deal. His agent has manage to find him a PL club, which will also help his international career. I'm sure he spoke about his options with Irish management team.

How many players in last 5 years have been here longer than 4 years (as a full time professional)?
    Woody
    Smith
    Mattock

How many players have we given 5yr deals too?

If we had sold him last yr as a L1 player with a yr left, £700k at best.

If we sold him 2 yrs ago as a relegated championship player, then similar to Crookes or Ajayi, maybe £1.2 to £1.5m, if those offers came in we would have sold him, but they didn't as clubs not wanting to pay that much for a RWB from Rotherham.

If selling now his worth increased due to breaking into Ireland squad and them playing him as a forward. We then struggled to sign a decent forward so played him up front. If Warne had signed a decent striker or two at start of last season, Cheio would still be played at RWB. Most likely he would have left at end of his contract any way to find a club that would play him as a forward and a new challenge.

All ifs and buts for a winger plenty moaned that couldn't cross and wanted shut in Jan transfer when his effort and contribution waned.
