This is the surf at Watergate Bay.

It’s a beautiful and spectacular place if you’re in that part of Cornwall.

Surf like that doesn’t faze me there but only be so know the bay and understand the variables, I wouldn’t risk it elsewhere on a lonely winters day.

Just standing watching the waves at Watergate when the wind is up is a sight to behold, you can just feel the power of nature.

I'd never heard of a rip until I watched (ahem) Baywatch in my ****s and after looking up riptides a few years ago to find out how to spot and get out of them it absolutely staggers me that this isn't drummed into children in school. RNLI has some brilliant information on how to survive if you ever find yourself in trouble.

Worst thing you can do in a rip is panic and swim against it, you’re actually better off conserving your energy to stay afloat even if you’re getting dragged further out initially.

Save energy and then try to use the bigger waves to push you back towards shore.

It feels counterintuitive though, natural instinct is to try to swim against a rip towards shore but you’re actually going backwards whilst wasting energy and panicking.

It’s often best to swim laterally and to find a spot where there’s no rip and head in that way.

All easier said than done whilst in s state of panic.

One rule of thumb I always have is to not go out further than chest height, as soon as you can’t feel the sand with your feet you’re in exponentially greater danger.

Ilfracombe, Devon just recently. At 7.25 there is even some idiot who decides to drive their car and then park it in what is such an obviously dangerous situation.

I think it was a Peugeot.

I’d do that with a Peugeot to be honest!

To be honest, I can sort of understand the kids at the start of the clip doing what they did (basically behaving like young ****agers) but as the height of the waves and the volume of water increases WTF were the adults doing? Silly c unts indeed!
