I always thought the well was used by the original brewery as a reliable source of clean water, set in a mixed oak and other woodland in the valley.
Wouldn't wood rot unless treated with preservative/ bitumen tar as on ships, ruining the taste of the water.
The old song, "Hearts of Oak are our wells, Jolly Tars are our brewers" springs to mind.

1st Half
We set off like a train and on 10 minutes I thought we would score 5 - then we dropped off a cliff and it looked like we would lose.
Wigan have had enough chances to be well ahead by 3 or 4.
It’s beyond frustrating !!!
Do we look anything like a promotion winning team ???
Not at all.
I haven’t a clue what formation we are playing - especially down our right hand side.
Are OKeeffe and Williams playing midfield ???
These 2 going AWOL on numerous occasions.
Player watch.
Kane - 2 yards off the pace - terrible.
Mael - looking good.
McCart - solid.
We need to rejig the midfield and put an extra striker on IMO.
Very unconvincing so far , the back three again showing more evidence if we ever needed it that we just can't defend when the ball is delivered in to the box .
Stopping the cross at source seems to escape us but there you are .
You take everything that's given in this game of course and we've got the opening goal .
We just don't perform in the second half of games it's becoming a regular thing!
It seems we run at teams full pelt to get in front, then the stamina fails.
Trouble is when that happens and changes need making, the quality off the bench isn't good enough.
2nd Half.
Well I thought we had turned a corner with the 1st Half against Vale and the performance against Peterborough.
But we haven’t.
Back to normal …….. DIRE.
Many of the Barnsley players were off the pace
Williams.
Kane.
Connell - surprisingly.
Phillips - one pass doesn’t constitute a good game.
Could say that Barnsley looked tired because of the number of games played.
But Wigan have played the same number and they deserved to have won this one.
Highly frustrating.
Back to wondering if Collins is up to the job.
Wigan throughly deserved a point we didn’t do enough of the good stuff.
Why did we sub our front two that still looked sharp when we have no game until 13th Jan.
He’s still tinkering.
From criticising then for not going out and defending a two goal lead at Posh on Friday, we seemed happy to sit back and allow them on to us to defend it at 1-0… strange!!
Mcatee sub was baffling… and the withdrawal of Phillips seemed to lose us any chance of going forward when we got the ball.
This lot…9th ot tenth. To be honest there was Nil excitement in tue game today. When the crowd are reduced to cheering a rouge “fire jet” then it says it all.
The Wigan lad took the goal well though.
On a hiding to nowt is Collins with the changes he made , he's getting fed the data that players are running out of gas and at the same time the players coming on just don't impact the game .
Ultimately that isn't why we dropped two points , we dropped two points because it was a poor performance all afternoon and we barely deserved the point in the end .
I had serious reservations about Collins earlier in the season I'll admit but as the seasons got on I've come to appreciate the dog shyte hand he's been dealt by the recruitment people .
You can't make a silk purse out of a sours ear .
Nowt off that bench is going to change too much and Collins knows it .
He knows we can't defend the ball in to the box and in my opinion he's doing what he can to cover up the huge amount of flaws in this squad .
Unless we see more quality coming in this month this is how it's going to be .
We might sneak a play off spot but we could easily not .
