Thankfully I did not watch the match last night as I was driving back from my caravan but I did have it on the radio and it sounded dreadful but all the blame seems to be pouring on to Southgate but surely the players are also culpable , no manager since Sir Alf have ever been successful and apart from Terry Venables I cannot remember any head coach that the fans have really taken to , what I am saying is that basically we are not as good as people think we are , we havn"t been successful for almost 60 years and whilst we can still do well in this competition I think perspective is required and not expectation .

    My favourite was Joe Mercer.

Seven games in charge 1974, won 3, drew 3, lost 1. Won the 1974 Home Championship.

    Lovely free flowing football.

    100% correct Arby.

If you didn’t know how good the England players were.
You had seen them for the first time during this tournament.
Then what would you think of them ???

Now turn the clock back to last season at Barnsley.

The impact a manager / head coach can have on a team.

Personally I believe the injuries to our best defenders and Southgates lack of belief in his stand in defenders has forced him to become over cautious.

Its meant that the more creative players have been starved of the ball. The Danes laiked one up front yet we had Rice far too deep which was far too overcautious meaning the midfield link up play was none existent

To me the emphasis should be on the attacking players and it isn't. The team look afraid of conceding goals and have dropped far too deep inviting the opposition onto us which leaves our more influential players isolated and facing their own goal when receiving the ball and unable to keep possession to keep a natural flow of passing football.

If we are operating this way against average international teams, then I'd hate to think how we're gonna do against the big hitters

    Absolute embarrassment .
Couldn’t agree more animal, thought I was back at Wembley watching Evattball but sadly these players are supposed to be a class above. I think Kane let the cat out of the bag when he said that the players just didn’t really know what they were doing. These guys play under some of the best managers and coaches in the world and I suspect they recognise the deficiencies in Southgate because those players really didn’t look like they were trying or even enjoying being there judging by the miserable looks on their faces. We can only hope that Southgate accepts he’s got his team wrong and starts playing round pegs in round holes but I won’t hold my breath on it. ☹️

Ok then for all the usual Gareth hater nonsense on here, who next ehh, who should we replace him with ?.
Who would want the (admittedly high profile and very well paid) England managers job, which is a disgusting 'poison chalice' actually ?.
Gareth has taken us further in tournaments than the previous big name managers, during a so called golden generation of quality players. 😕

Good question Acido and one that will need answering when Southgate leaves the job either way after this tournament finishes. Given the salary and status of the job I don’t think there will be a lack of applicants so whoever it is I’m sure they’ll be well qualified. Given the quality of some of the players we have you’d have to think that there is better than Southgate out there. He doesn’t inspire me so goodness knows how he inspires the players and I think to be honest he’s been a very lucky boy with the quality of players he’s had which in my opinion he’s wasted. I’d have sacked him after losing the final to Italy where his selections and game plan completely suited the Italians with all the pace taken out of our side. That said I’m sure like everybody we want him to do well and I’d sooner see him go successfully after winning this tournament rather than with disappointment. I still believe the players can do it I’m just not sure Gareth can? ☹️

Agree with that Whites , he should have gone after the last Euros given the way we let that final slip from our fingers and he should most definitely have gone after the last World Cup .

My opinion of Southgate is that whilst he's created a better environment within the England set up and created a better culture he was always tactically suspect and way too timid for my liking .

It seems to me that the better culture thing has now run it's course and his lack of tactical ability and timid mindset has now started to create a poor camp for the England players who look confused , bemused and I dare say have lost faith in Southgate .

This looks the least together squad of the tournaments that Southgate has managed England .

That performance against Denmark and the second half against Serbia was every bit as bad as the Taylor , Hodgson and Capello era's .

It takes an extraordinary poor coach to reduce Bellingham , Foden , Saka and Kane in to a powder puff attack given their ability .

One tournament too many for Southgate in my opinion , well past his sell by date .

I'm not much bothered whether the England manager is English or not looking ahead just as long as they are the best person available .

I'm always impressed with Thomas Frank and I think he'd be a good fit with his experience of English football .
