However, we could do with building a relationship with a like-minded club in the NL system, where we can send young players on loan and help their development. Right now, the jump from our development team to the first XI is too great - especially as the days when we might have a special talent like Pennant, Kilcline or Draper on the youth books are presumably long gone. James Sanderson will be an interesting test case this season.
I do like your idea of a relationship withNL side to get out youth ready but challenge the point about a special talent, as there are lots of examples of Notts youth released then ending UK somewhere better than us, Ed Francis is the latest example of this , now in league 1

    Is the message that bad?

Join our youth team, we'll train you up for years, get you a series of loan placements to get some experience, and you'll land a professional job at the end of it?

Anyway, best of luck to him, hope he has a fantastic career!

Hard as Russ_OTF's post sounded, there is no room for sentiment in football. Players cannot be favoured because they have been developed in house.

Didn't intend it to be harsh. Just a statement of fact. The level we are and want to aspire to is not his current level. So best for all to cut losses so he can move on.

Being a youth GK must be one of the hardest spots to move into. Only one GK can play. Unless you're exceptional it's not going to happen.

Look at Speiss. He was very talented but that run in our team completely ruined him. He never recovered and ended up leaving the professional game.

I agree… given that we are/were hoping to move Stone on as well, it makes sense to let essentially a 4th choice keeper leave. I hope he develops and becomes a cracking keeper.

Ed Francis came from Man City’s academy, which is kind of the point I was making about it being hard for us to find, develop and keep young talent from ages 8-18. The best in our catchment area will invariably end up at Forest, Leicester and Derby.

Yeah, maybe so and perhaps Ed Francis was a bad example but there are lots of others out there. I miss the buzz and excitement of some home grown talent coming through the ranks and shining in the 1st team. Oh well, still Sanderson and Mahovo to pin my hopes on.

The reviews of his time in Ireland and at Rochdale were less than positive, not helped by several injuries.
Like the vast majority of our recent youth talents, he likely isn't good enough currently, but that might change.

With clubs like Forest, Derby and Leicester on our doorstep, we are always getting second choice, plus we are still feeling the effects of falling out of league football where we lost a host of our top prospects.

Out reality is that we are picking up youth players bigger clubs in our area don't want. Then picking up the ****agers they go on to release. The likelihood of one of those being good enough in the end is very very slim.

Even when we have players who look like they will make it they will get poached. Etete and Bearne recent examples.

I'm really not sure where this sell on clause talk has come from. Notts triggered his release clause. 50k upfront, no instalments, no negotiating with Gateshead needed.
