You are probably right as back then football players received a low basic weekly wage with playing in first team and win bonuses being paid.
Nowadays football players have a written contract and they are paid their monthly salary whether they are playing in the team or sitting in the stand watching the game.
Pat Liney told me when I had a tour of Dens Park in December 2013 that Bob Shankly told him (Pat Liney) he would still be receiving first team wages despite Shankly picking Bert Slater to play in goal during the 1962-63 season.
