Both those songs are in my performance repertoire. His live and recorded versions are brilliant. (I find them bloody hard to remember when I do them because they're so long - especially the Edmund Fitzgerald!)
For me there are some memories tied up in the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I moved to Michigan in February 1975 for work and remember the night the EF sank in November of that year. It was just a couple of hundred miles to the north of me on Lake Superior and reported extensively on the local news. When the record came out a few months later, it received major airplay on local radio and I bought the excellent LP "Summertime Dream" which included it.
In 2014, my wife and I, together with a couple of my daughters and a grandson, made a memory lane trip back to Michigan to visit old haunts. We went to the "Maritime Sailors Cathedral" in Detroit and also took an extended trip to the Upper Peninsular of Michigan to visit Whitefish Bay on the southern shore of Lake Superior where there is an excellent Edmund Fitzgerald museum next to the lighthouse. The whole thing was very special.
I'd recommend the "Lightfoot" book if your interested in knowing more about the man. He wasn't an easy character and definitely had his demons.
