I'm sorry but the prem is not that much different than la liga, bundesliga or seria A as far as keeper quality goes. Some really good ones available for a lot less money. I also can't help but wonder if some one that plays for a team where the Keeper "gets hung out to dry" isn't better than someone that plays for one of the best teams in the world and gets 5 shots a game at him.

I"m not MLS fan but there are some really good keeps in that league. They have to be because their defenses aren't that good. They get tested regularly and they'd been so much less expensive. The yanks do produce some really good keepers and have for years.

The money pool is only so deep and we can get better bang for the buck at striker or wing back than keeper. Just my 2 cents.
Quite a few keepers considering potential offered deals from clubs trading them out.

Coincidently Spaldy, the goalkeeper Petrovic who was the 2022 season finalist for both the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award & the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award is linked to us.

The 6' 4 Serbian international keeper Djordje Petrovic, 25, who has been on loan this season at Strasbourg from Chelsea, is according to reports in France is also now on our radar as Chelsea will have 4 keepers chasing 2 places now.

He actually turned down a move to French Ligue1 Nantes to join Chelsea but opted to join Strasbourg coached by Liam Rosenior for regular first team match time.
Rosenoir expects him to move on to better things now his season long loan has finished.

Cannot see him warming the Chelsea bench next season as his form has been exceptional in 24/25 & he was voted RC Strasbourgs Player of the Year, beating out fellow Chelsea loanee Andrey Santos helping the French club into the Euro Conference cup next season - Strasbourg are interestingly a Chelsea sister club ownership wise & no doubt will be shedding a few players this summer from their various squads.

In all honesty I think a PL keeper needs to be of a certain age with International experience particularly at a club like Leeds, so it will be interesting to see who we may hook, if indeed we do.

    MT,

really hope you are right on this keeper prospect. I have nothing against Kelleher. However, I have a lot against 30-40 million being used on that slot. I know how critical it was to us this season and almost cost us promotion but panic buying a keeper and using up funds we are going to need in other spots is not the solution

I am a little surprised that Darlow appears to have been given no consideration. He's been solid and he isn't afraid of trying to take control of the box which is something we really need with our restarts.

Talking of keepers, this FA law 22-2 & recent Var shenanigans regarding Villa denied a goal at Old Trafford resulting in complaints to referees body Professional Game Match Officials Limited after an alleged mistake by ref Thomas Bramall contributed to them losing 2-0 at Man U & missing out on the Champions League placing.🤔

With the match goalless and Villa down to 10 men after goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was correctly sent off, the visitors thought Morgan Rogers had given them the lead.

Rogers had 'nudged the ball away' from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir as he attempted to gather & slotted home.
However, Bramall blew for a foul thinking Bayindir had 2 hands on the ball 'tho television footage showed otherwise.

Cos Bramall stopped play before the ball entered the net the video assistant referee, aka VAR could not intervene.

Law 22- 2 actually states a goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with the hand/s when the ball is 'between' the hands.

So, the ball was 'between 2 hands' but 🧐
So what do you think ?

Were Villa controversially DENIED crucial goal against Man Utd ?

Whatever that law 22-2 needs adjusting word choice wise, imo, adding control of ball directives or alternative ball held considerations, for sure !

Some would argue is the ball ever fully under control in certain circumstance, likewise as is the ball always under the control or an attacker, too.

Tough for refs, some may say too.

I saw that play in real time as well as replays.

It is really a broken record but the poor officiating in the FA continues to favor certain teams. I'm not Villa fan but that really is a bucket or wrong. The real issue is that ball went into the back of the net and the play was close. However, for years many refs were taught (including me) that 50/50 plays involving goals errored in the side of letting the goal stand. This most often occurred on offsides.

It's been corrupted to the point where fingernails and shoelaces now overrule goals. It's bad for the game, fans and frankly the players. Takes so much away from the game. It's the biggest thing I'll miss about the championship. Every close goal in the prem is some long drawn out delay.

I don't have stats but suspect that these allowed or disallowed goals go disproportionately to the "big club" and especially the "big 6".

FWIW - the situation was not helped by goalkeeper discipline & concentration.

Without sounding to technical goalkeeper gloves all have limitations that can lead to ball slips.

The main weakness is the potential loss of grip due to the tacky latex substance on them drying out with wear & the finger protection inlays on gloves which can reduce the keepers feel of the ball.

My brother has a warm water spray bottle in the nets which he sprays onto his gloves throughout the game as he is encouraged not to spit into his gloves.
Finger protectors are varied & personal choice dictates styles required.

After viewing the above youtube close ups hes sure the gloves were the problem onto actually gripping that spinning ball.

So another one of those situations where banner headlines of genuine keeper mistakes takes precedent over a succession of natural contributing factors that can & do occur with a ref not ideally placed for making split second calls.
