Never heard of Byers.
YouTubed him and IMO he doesn’t look a Barnsley type of player.
Too small and lightweight.
So not for me.
I think the speculation is probably his agent trying to drum up some interest in him.
Cheers for the reply on the shares question SB.
He was one of their best players last season and when he got injured, their season started to fall apart.
Small and lightweight isn’t always a bad thing. Our best player, Luca Connell, fits that bracket and I’d take him over any midfielders in this division and a fair chunk in the division above too.
Small and lightweight - depends on the position they play.
IMO we never should have let Luke Thomas go.
But Luke was an attacking winger / midfielder.
Byers - what I’ve seen of him on YouTube is more a central midfielder ball player.
I wouldn’t describe Luca Connell as small and lightweight BTW.
He doesn’t look a massive lad but he’s solid enough.
I’d be surprised if Byers is on the Barnsley radar.
But if he is - obviously the recruitment team have seen things about him that you can’t see on just YouTube.
When you say small & lightweight do you mean someone like Martin Bullock Nudge ? I am surprised you have never heard of him as he was a key player for one of our rivals last season who performed very well for them ,but what surprises me more is that if you have not heard of him then you have obviously not seen him yet you are writing him off without watching him, hopefully you are not scouting for the Reds.
Agree that position matters. I would say centre backs needs to be big and tough and a target man striker as well. Wing backs and central midfielders don’t need size in my opinion, just the ability to play a bit and cover the yardage.
Byers and Connell are similar heights and builds I would say. I’m very sure that they won’t be using YouTube, that can make anyone look good, as was the case with Odejayi!
I’ve YouTubed him. I’ve already said that.
Not the best way of judging a player, I know that, but it does give an indication of how they play, generally what position they play and what they look like.
I’m not impressed with what I saw.
And I’d be surprised if Barnsley recruitment team are.
As I’ve also said - if he was a player that played like Luke Thomas (or Martin Bullock) then that’s a different matter - because I reckon we should have at least two players at the club that can run at defenders.
So personally I’d have players with that attribute at the club - but that’s not how the recruitment team see it.
As I said recently - there is / was a sign up at the club saying something on the lines if ‘we don’t play with wingers’.
I’m guessing it’s because wingers are for offensive reasons only.
The system we have maintains that every player signed should be able to both defend and attack.
And that includes the goalkeeper ie good at passing the ball out.
To be honest I can’t tell you the name of any Sheffield Wednesday player - other than Windass (more because of his dad) and Bannon.
So you have watched him on you tube & already judged him , out of interest how many minutes did you watch , 5 , 10 , 20 or maybe even 90 minutes ? which would equate to one match , now you believe you know a bit about football then if you do then you will know better than to judge someone on 90 minutes but to be honest I should not be surprised as there are plenty of reds fans who judge players on where they have come from or without seeing them they are written off, I"m pleased we gave King Ronnie a bit of time otherwise he would have been written off as well , my thoughts are simple , do not make snap judgements, watch a player for a number of matches & I mean watch them live not on some selective tv or video clips at least by doing that you can watch them off the ball as well as on the ball , see how they tackle, see how they pass , see how hard they work to pick up opponents off the ball , look at their fitness levels but most of judge them after a period of time & judge them on their overall contribution to the cause but never make snap judgements .
