You took the words right out of my mouth. Basing fears and creating hysteria around one case, of one very f***ed up individual, is quite shortsighted.
Being non-resident in Scotland I haven't followed the law too closely so am not going to comment on the safeguarding side, although i do agree safeguarding is crucial (and arguably severly lacking around the world in non LGBTQ+ incidents too). Don't be a playground bully and point and laugh at anyone different. Just accept differences as what makes life diverse and interesting. My only argument here echoes what 57 stated above. Let people be happy, and be themselves, as long as they are doing no harm to others. Don't tar everyone with the brush of a tiny minority or you end up in the territory of 'all Muslims are terrorists, all Americans are gun toting crazies, all Hungarians are racist, people on benefits are scroungers and lazy.......all LGBTQ+ are perverts'. That's not a good place to be.
Then mixing Mondo and 57s sentiments, let them be, and if there is a queue of rapists queuing up for gender reassignment then repeal the law before the damage is done. But I would say that scenario is extremely unlikely.
Oh, and it's "how many cases..." 😉
"Royal assent"
What kind of pathetic country needs royal assent before a law made in parliament is ratified?
I have no opinion or interest in this as it doesn't affect me but I am curious about one point.
By all accounts s3x offenders get a fairly rough time of it in Jail - boohoo I hear you say.
I suspect many of the women in Cornton Vale may be a little tough and scary.
What odds of an anatomically intact rapist surviving a night in said establishment without receiving an anesthetic free gender re-assignment?
I know (quite well in some cases) some law abiding women that reach for the garden shears if they are called sweetheart.
Just seems an unlikely scenario to raise.
Of course that's the Unionist agenda, the right-wing heid the ba's are a bit triggered by this conceptually (I blame same *** boarding schools.....see "Mogg...") but they're far more triggered by radical, Scotland only, legislation......which is how they view this.
The different drink drive limits slipped past the libertarians on the blind side.
There have been a very small amount but that's not the point the opportunity has never really been there before...It is now. We all know how cunning s e xual predators including *****philes can be getting themselves into environments to commit crimes. And I have to be really clear here Trans people have an absolute right to live their lives as they wish and have my full support. Its the holes and gaps in this bill that really worry me and indeed thousands of Women in this country. Its been left open to exploitation and abuse. The zealots who pushed this through and I'm talking about those who have invaded the SNP at every level ..taken over branches and dominate the NEC. These are the folk who don't give a toot about Women's safety and also Trans rights they have done that community a great disservice. By accepting a simple couple of amendments we could have put safeguards in to protect others rights.. Rights to feel safe in spaces. And with respect DondyDan you should have commented on the "safeguarding issue Because that IS the issue !
