Maybe we could say that they weren't "mentally at it", but the fans and football attitudes in general are a factor in that, not just the manager's team talk and starting selection. There is a very obvious problem with the FA Cup and has been for a very long time.

It's possible for both to be true. The players on the pitch gave 100%, but the team selection treated the FA Cup as being of secondary importance. We played nowhere near our strongest side, so we didn't take it seriously. We prioritised the league instead.

Supporters should know the deal by now when it comes to the FL Trophy and League Cup.
FA cup wise, it's been less obvious where our priorities lie - Hardy sacked a manager after an FA Cup defeat - but since the current owners took over it seems we take the FAC no more seriously than than the lesser cup competitions.

This is the most upset a cup exit to a FL outfit I can ever remember seeing on here. It rivals some of the exits to non-league clubs.

I think people are overegging this a little. The first goal was due to pitch conditions, sure the pitch was safe to play in but would still have been slippy, studs wouldn't have been as useful and hence Baldwin slipped.

The other two goals come from trying to make head it, kick it, kick them type defenders into cultured ball playing centre backs, for the majority of the time they will be ok but they will make absolute hashes of it from time to time and in this instance, in tricky conditions, it happened twice. If we want to keep playing like we do, we need to invest in centre backs that can play that role and also expect that ball playing centre backs in league 2 are either going to cost a pretty penny or be prone to the odd mistake (and in some cases, both!)

Even if the conditions were perfect, it was still completely the wrong move to try and take on the forward that close to goal

Having avoided watching any of the game up to now, two friends (not Notts fans) asked me about what happened so I finally watched.

And no, I don't think it was overegged at all. You would have struggled to believe it at the 8th tier, especially the first and third.

I did not see the game but the fact there appears to be almost total agreement that we gifted the opposition three goals with schoolboy defending and therefore the game then we did take the match seriously.

I was under the impression bar the horrific individual mistakes and decision making we actually played quite well with pleasing Gosling and Austin impressing and we were actually the better side over the 90+ minutes. So selected a side which turned out to be good enough and put enough effort in to win it without the costly errors.

Perhaps you can't always believe what you read.

Anyway I am far more interested in the league and how we respond against Walsall. I think we will bounce back positively.

It is a lovely sentiment, and all supporters would want 100% effort, 100% of the time but in reality it never works like. Or even close to be honest.

If the view is that the team selection by the coaches amounted to the club not taking the competition serious (or taking the piss) then that is fair enough, it was a much changed side and far from our strongest. However, I doubt many were surprised by the team selected for 2nd round of the FA cup.

As for the players, the question for me is was there effort from the players who were selected? Was there the usual good, bad and on this occasion ugly performances that we have seen in many matches over the years?
