I can see both sides. You can remember past glories and be a yes or no voter. However it seems inconsistent to me to claim to be patriotic yet not want to govern your own country. They can call me all the Hamishes in the world - it does not make sense. I can imagine my Georgian pal, Shota, 'yes I am patriotic but I loved being under Moscow rule.

From where I'm sitting (in deepest Merrie England) the winner of this vote will be whichever side delivers a knockout blow just before polling day, and I can't help feeling Salmond is cooking something up for that day as we speak.

From my own perspective I believe in the UK and will be sorry to see Scotland leave what has been a unique partnership of nations, but we will see!

Because (a) I don't think economically it will be of much consequence to the average punter in the street (in England or Scotland), but ( b ) I have an emotional attachment to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I believe that together we have achieved a hell of a lot and still punch above our weight. Apart we will be diminished. Might be a load of tripe but it's what I believe in and I will be genuinely sad if the vote is 'yes'.
