Calzaghie didn't want to fight him because Froch was a nobody. Joe had been at the top for years and had earned the chance to make big money and fight the big boys in America.
He did Froch a favour because he would have given him a boxing lesson. Froch didn't want to fight Groves but had to concede when his title was going to be taken away.
He as been a good champion and doesn't duck anyone but he falls just below being classed as an all time great.

Sometimes champions refuse to fight certain opponents for certain reasons - the fighter could pose a problem or undeserving of the opportunity - the champion has nothing to gain but everything to lose.

Eg: Marquez was a great boxer and champion but he'd never be in Pacquiao's class but yet he was the very type of boxer whose style would give the Pacman problems.

Froch won't be an all time great for his boxing skills because he has his own unorthodox style which means he takes too many punches. But no doubt about it, he is an all time great when he comes to his resume and his will to take on the best of his division fight after fight after fight in this country or abroad! No other boxer currently boxing can live up to his resume.

sorry ktcg i have to disagree, the only way calzaghe could retire was by giving up the belts as he remained unbeaten, yes calzaghe fought some duds but he beat veit twice eubanks kessler in his prime who beat froch before his skills began to wane lacey hopkins who went on to regain world titles after, roy jones junior robin reid who was in his prime and dangerous.
no one wanted to fight calzaghe and the americans who did fight him got destroyed.
froch talks too much b0ll0cks not mentally prepared etc then claims he's the consumate pro always totally prepared.
personally think groves on points he'll pick his rounds this time and get on the back foot when he needs to.
i respect froch and his take all comers attitude and think he's a good boxer but to say he's better than calzaghe is wrong imo.

I don't really know who is going to win this one. And I don't think either fighter has covered themselves in glory in the build up to either fight, they are like a couple of school kids.

The one thing that I do know, Andre Ward must be thinking WTF, when he sees how much publicity and money there is surrounding two fighters that aren't fit to lace his gloves!!

I don't quite think some of you are reading what I put. I've no disagreements that Calzaghe was a better boxer. But there's so much more
