    But isn't it a fair point to suggest that it should be a collective responsibility of all premier league and football league academies to help give the national team every fighting chance, by bringing through the best possible players for the national side?

    This issue underpins exactly why England will never win anything, because the success of our teams in our domestic leagues takes absolute precedence.

    Of course it's not Derby's soul responsibility but it should be more of a collective one. If as a football mad nation we want to have any aspiration on the world stage again, the flow of players has to improve.

    I am a hypocrite in that I nearly spilled my coffee over my laptop with the news that Calero scored on his debut, but sadly as football fans I don't think that we can have our cake and eat it. You can't expect to watch exotic entertaining football at the expense of not going through the motions of giving homegrown players a chance and still expect anything more from
