    He wasn't sacked for failing on the park.

    [quote="rjc_1988"]Agree Jardi.

    Thought both McIntyre and Johnston made bad decisions. If they were to move it had to be for a decent step up - good solid English club say in League 1 or to one of the top 4 Scottish clubs. Johnston has now put himself in the category of"damaged goods" and will be fortunate to get back in any time soon. He left us high and dry and Sandy Clark couldn't wait to get away either.

    Could Fowler be a target for Killie? I think not - having appointed an inexperiened manager last time they will be reluctant to dive in. Would I take AJ back if that happened? Possibly but there is part of me that says no out of principle.

    As for Jim McIntyre that is an easier call. He seems to be getting further and further away from the Highland model that saw a decent number of local players coming through. Every time I look at their team lines they seem to have new players coming and going on a conveyor belt. No continuity and destined for the drop

    General, Fowler is a pretty astute lad for 33.

    I would agree with him that Burns could manage Queens in the future.

    Allan Johston was a professional footballer who went on to become a professional football manager. - ie managing a football club is (or was) what he does for a living. He gave us a great season so let us not forget that: but let us also not forget that during that great season we were a full-time club playing in a part-time league. In other words, it would not have reflected well on Allan Johnston if we had not done well.
    On the strength of a very successful season at Palmerston he was offered the opportunity to manage Kilmarnock. It cannot be realistically argued that Kilmarnock, as an established Premiership club, was not a better option than Queen of the South for an ambitious manager: and the overwhelming likelihood was that Allan Johnston would not have similar success with Queens ever again. So what was he to do? Most football managers (and,indeed, most employees) when faced with a similar situation would have done what he did - move onwards and upwards. Sadly, it did not wor

    I was and still am an AJ fan. Yes we were the only full time in the league but the players he had at that time were a bunch of kids that he brought the best out of. It could be argued that McPherson had a stronger side in terms of experience and look what a disaster he turned out to be. AJ was the one who had the courage to go with youth and brought in most of the current side and produced a fantastic side. So for that alone I take my hat off to him.

    On the down side, I said it at the time and say it again. He left us a season to early. If he stayed and had a good season in the championship, which I have no doubts would have happened, the man would have had the opportunity at a far better club than Kilmarnock.

    Alex Neil is a prime example of that with his move from Hamilton to Norwich.

    Two excellent posts from Cresswell and Fatfan. However, the latter hits the nail firmly on the head by illustrating Alex Neil's move from Hamilton to Norwich.

    If AJ had checked the impulse to fill his own pockets and decided instead to remain with QOS, he would now be working south of the border with both AJ and QOS remunerated by several more times than that received from Kilmarnock.

    A man joining a club in massive debt , where the ex boss was still very popular and he himself had only been manager for a year. Therefore a man in too much of a hurry that made a poor judgement . Wrong move.

    I think it's easy to be critical. Can anyone hazard a guess (or does anyone know) how much AJ was on at Queens and how much of a jump in salary the move to Killie gave him? Must have been a real consideration, especially given that we're not talking EPL wages in either case. I'd imagine there might also have been a wee voice in the back of his mind saying "This may be the only chance you'll ever get". And if Queens had gone on a bad run who's to say this might not have been the case?

    To answer your question Louis IMO AJ would have been on about £30,000 a year. In moving to Kilmarnock I think he may have doubled his wages at least.. However if he had stayed I have no doubts he would be at a bigger club down south and on at least £100,000 a year. The following season we made the play off with McIntyre in place and that was with a shocker of a start, mainly due to McIntyre not knowing his best team for the first half of the season. AJ knew his best side and I have no doubt we would have been challenging for the league under him instead of challenging for fourth spot.

    That would have given him a much higher profile and would have led to a queue of clubs wanting his signature. I take your point about it possibly being his only chance to take the step up, but if he had the confidence in his ability as a manager then it would have been worth the gamble.

    For me the man is a good manager. He has had a big say on where we are today and he took over a Kilmarnock side that a
