    re: Chalk and Cheese

I think this highlights whats wrong sometimes (certainly on here, which usually echoes how supporters get things completely wrong)
All this highlighting of whats wrong, who cant do what.

Yet no balance? We have Gomez who is by far the best type of flair player we have lacked for years.
Despite being shocked and appalled how bad things where on Sat, I thought Gomez was the only beacon of light. He has been superb in the 2 matches I've seen so far. And made a huge difference. On sat he was on his own (apart from our new centre hlaf who also looks decent). But he stands out so much now. Barley a mention.

[quote="Despair"]That's perfectly fine Aucks and I would not disagree with your view in any way.
I just say it how I see it, as it comes across to me. That makes me no expert, or right in any way.
Just before GB was dropped I had said that for the first time I was getting concerned for our safety, whereas before we were (in my mind) drifting, but bearably safe. That though was not good enough in our perilous financial situation.
Given our declined stature as a club (under Venkys and their 'record'), I thought it a decent coup to attract PL, despite what some others thought of his tarnished reputation. With AV, I myself never took that as a perfectly viable benchmark.
For me he was always going to tinker and gamble for some time whilst seeing what his inherited charges were capable of, and with it his newer recruits. With that there were always going to be ups and downs in performance and results. But I think that given his experience and stature he can ride

Gomez was a brilliant signing and more often than not will be the difference for us
if you look at lamberts signings they all offer something different but in my opinion will all contribute to us in different ways
Gomez obviously the creative influence we have been crying out for
Bennett tough start but getting better the pace on the wings perfect for counter attacks
Graham yes his prem record is awful but at this level he has form and after netting his first for us I wouldn't rule out him going on a run
watt potential and pace give him time and he could be a big player for us
Jackson a great player to come on a get into the opposition and as I have said before a bit of a panto villain who is the the last player we had like that?diouf?
ward good centre half and will be putting much needed pressure to Hanley and Duffy
Grimes comes with good reviews but if he is like lamberts other signings then we should be ok
as for Lambert himself I think time is needed if you look at thos

I agree about giving him time, Robin.
My main feeling, though, is that we need to be cautious. I'm hoping you're right about all the signings, but it is odd that so many of them were struggling to get a game at their previous clubs.
I don't like reacting too strongly to one game. Remember how easily we beat Charlton, Ipswich and Leeds earlier this season?
What I'd really like to see is a run of good results (and performances).
I saw one fan on another site describe our goals as two keeper errors and a penalty. I think that's a bit harsh, but I am concerned about getting carried away on the back of this game, when we still seem capable of turning in a performance like the one against Hull.
Perhaps the surge of confidence will launch the consistency we need.

Lets not get carried away with the new signings just yet lads.

Remember we ve been here before with new players looking the part then disappearing off the face of the earth.

I remember the hula baloo about Koitas debut ...look what happened there.

As has been pointed out these lads couldnt get a game at their clubs and have ended up here. Hopefully they ll flourish but lets wait and see before getting too excited.

We need consistency not one good result/performance every six games. Hopefully the Fulham game is the catalyst to start that and to be honest id have prefered us to be playing a league game this weekend with another on Tuesday ? to hopefully kick on .

Totally agree that we could do without the Cup game at this point. If West Ham turn in a PL performance and beat us comfortably, our confidence might be dented again. Of course, if we win, that would be a huge boost for morale. The latter doesn't always work, though. Sometimes, there is a hangover after the defeat of a PL club - as if the players feel a sense of anti-climax.
I'm not trying to be gloomy, by the way. The Fulham win was just what we needed. I'm simply wary of treating one game as a guaranteed game-changer.

The whole team sprinkled on mine during the Hull game. Haven't quite removed the taste yet. A 2-0 victory over West Ham will restore the chips to virgin purity.

Beat me to it there Howie, having just read the thread I just wonder why we are viewing it game by game? Maybe why viewpoints are so yo - yo.
PL's task short term is next game, medium term is respectful position at end of season. And long term - promotion the next.
The popular saying is 'its a battle, not the war'.
This division proves time and time again that to focus upon individual battles means almost nothing

AS for the upcoming battle, I'm with Aucks as its a difficult one to call. For me simply because PL has a bit of a dilemma, in terms of does he go looking for a confidence booster (on the back of the last game), and with it risk a morale damaging effect if a heavy defeat ensues. Or keep his powder dry for the next (IMO more important) league encounter.
Whatever he decides, you can be sure there will be divided opinion abounding, and yes that yo - yo of opinion will rear its ugly head again. WHU are favourites for all the right reasons, even though it is a one off cup en
