All good points Cayton.....but with all the obvious mitigating circumstances - you mentioned a few.....but:
Freck's & Captain Kirk instant long term injuries
Inadequate budget !
Late start after NW's procrastination.
( and major cull - leaving hare gaps )
Late start effecting all things pre-season.
Poor form of key players - particularly Greg Halford - Kelly - Wood....who were stalwarts last year but not this year.
( Remember- "You can't kick the ball for them" )
We were dangerous on the counter attack - we were SCORING goals....that's a very good sign....( 1 / 2...etc )
The young players - brought in on a poor budget were to be nurtured into shape - yet they shouldered more burden to to "senior players" poor form.....
The fact that we were always scoring under Stubbs - but the defence were leaky caused AS to shuffle the pack at the back to see who could do what....that was good management and the second month we were obtaining good draws and losing to the odd goal.
That was progress !
Interpolation of that progress and a window to ship out old legs and bring in what players as needed would be a recipe for future success..
And that would have been our season saved....perhaps...?......but better than half a season without a manager at all and that's what we've had.
Relegation wasn't certain this year but removing our Plan 'A' - vertually made it so.....
It was our best bet - and with the progress I saw - we could have saved the season.....
Betting men reinforce their bets to bolster their confidence.....people called for Stubbs head early on for bogus reasons....all this Stubbs hating is to bolster their original thoughts / decisions that Stubbs was rubbish.
The fact that he didn't come over as "Warne's NICE"...just made it easier - they didn't like him as a person although they never met him.....
I think given one window we would still be fighting for our lives or better still - safe and cruising.
TS panicked due to anti-social media pressure.... and for that - if true....MAY have cost the championship.
Now look what we've got....!...mmmmm
Give it a rest you lot, positives from today, Ward scored so that should put his value back up by at least 1k if we are selling!
I think it's harsh to criticise the OP's question. Given the history of rubbish appointments by the chairman and the history of sacking them before they've had chance to do anything, the question is very much relevant.
The fact that Warne has been given a one year rolling contact says it all for me. Stubbs and Redfearn were given 3 year contracts - a show of (misplaced) confidence in them. I know it saves in compo when the chairman decides to get rid, but it gives absolutely no backing to a manager that TS wants to invest in young players and help develop a training ground.
Added to what we already know about Warne - he has no tactical nous, doesn't seem to work on set pieces, signs players who aren't fit, who are fit but won't play them, prefers players who drink green tea...I reckon there's probably about an 80% chance Warne won't last the season?
I hope it works out though
I've done my best to look objectively at Warne's appointment, but still believe it is a major mistake.
I'll see what he does with reshaping the squad and the first 10 games of next season.
I wish I could say I was optimistic that I'll be changing my mind but I think by that point we will be closer to the bottom than the top of the division.
