Whilst I don't like Southgate, and think he's an inoffensive yes-man who'll do whatever the FA tell him no matter how detrimental to the national game, and that he's uninspiring even for an England manager, you have to look at the facts here.

Butland plays for Stoke, Pickford plays for Everton, Foster plays for Southampton, as does Bertrand. Maguire's at Leicester, Keane's at Everton, Defoe's at Bournemouth.

I get the general gist, but players from outside the seven teams FKB mentioned do get picked, whether through necessity or form. The problem in my eyes is that there simply aren't very many outstanding players available at the moment. If we look at yesterday's starting XI:

    Hart: Laughably inconsistent

Walker: Neglects his defensive duties. Think he'd be much better suited to being a right winger than a full back
Stones: Got a lot to live up to, and hasn't yet displayed any evidence that he's worth his £50m price tag
Cahill: Steady. Good solid man to have at the heart of defence
Bertrand: Presumably there because we have a complete lack of anything resembling decency at left-back

Henderson: nothing spectacular, but gets the job done
Dier: Needs to prove himself; not as good as he likes to think he is

Oxlade-Chamberlain: Not sure what went wrong but what happened to all that potential?
    Sterling: Too inconsistent
Rashford: Showed perhaps too much promise too young and now can't live up to the hype

Kane: Don't like the man and hated it when he wanted to do everything on the pitch but his scoring record speaks for itself. Probably the only world-class player we have on the pitch

Given that we invented the game, our current crop of players is laughable.

Agree Southgate is just an FA yes man, but isn't that the crux of the problem? Its the set up from top to bottom. The coaching staff are told to pick certain players and play in a certain way. They are utterly blinkered. I think the quote from Gary Neville after the Euros fiasco says it all really.

In other words you can be playing like a carthorse and still get picked!!!

the thing is with southgate and england theres no tempo to our play allowing other teams to get back in numbers but how can you get fast attacking play when youve got dier and henderson in midfield just passing ball back to centre backs every time they get the ball neither are international class anyway kane is the only world class player weve got

Henderson should be nowhere near an England shirt and neither should Dire ( see what I did there )

Who do you replace them with, though? The problem is wider than just who's picked, it's as much that there just aren't that many outstanding English players for whatever reason.

well first you only need 1 holding midfielder not 2 unless your playing spain germany or france and even then i wouldnt play 2 in there just go for it a fit and in form berkely would be my choice dier and henderson would not be in team if they didnt play for spurs and liverpool too negative both of em

Still wouldn't be good enough. An in-form Berkeley is still several orders of magnitude worse than top midfielders from other, more realistic contenders for winning the next World Cup.

Until there's a cap put on foreign players, managers, owners it will just get worse and worse.

Disagree, Mahatma. I don't think it's magically going to make our players better.

Maybe not but it's getting worse. And who knows with 150-200 more players to choose from we might find a gem.
