But our manager is a commited pro academy enthusiast. It is his choice of team selection, so the buck stops there.

You actually expect our board to do something about our current situation. My advice would be don`t hold your breath.

The home grown players are not the problem. In fact, they have been our better players all season. It is the brought in players who have at times under achieved

Home grown players not the Problem?? Cooper scored ONE GOAL all season worse record than AJ and he was rubbish, along with Saunders another who failed, after YEARS at the club,so that not a problem then. The Academy doing ok is it producing players worth they weight in Sand.

Is there a current player from our academy that is likely to fetch a reasonable fee in the current climate . I doubt so and this then brings in the question should we keep the academy . I have heard rumours that the club has sold young prospects to other clubs before they even get near the first team so they are making money from the academy. Any views on this

Because of the way the game has gone in recent years the transfer market doesn't favour lower league clubs selling players for big money. However, there is more to the benefits of an Academy than selling players for £1million or more. We are benefiting from having players graduate to the first team. Several started the game for us today and played very well in very poor conditions. Cooper may have only scored the one goal this season but I have lost count of the assists he has provided. Ainley also looks a very good player as does Lowery, Ng and of course the goal keeper. So, Itwasin, home grown players are not the problem. They are the solution!

I don't understand why certain posters continue to ignore the argument that the academy is not solely for million pound sales.

I Imagine it's the same posters who think that we're going to go shooting up the leagues if we'd just minimise youth development.

Yep, that's right: our poorly supported club, re-elected to the league 7 times between 1958 and 1986 (having spent just one season outside the bottom professional tier in its history prior to the Gradi era) is in fact a slumbering giant, held back only by the millstone of the Academy.

I’m ‘amused’ by those who demand that the Board should spend all their millions on making Crewe Alex a 1st Div or even Championship club. Apart from one director, I don’t think any of them are in the multi-millionaire class. Perhaps these fans would like to remortgage their house or max-out the credit card so the Alex can buy a new striker/midfielder?
The Academy, it seems to me, is a way of developing talent without hawking the club off to a transient, self-interested sugar daddy with the concentration span of a goldfish. It is a business model that has seen us stay in the League despite relatively poor attendances.
Of course there are things that could be done, of course mistakes will be made, of course the development of youngsters (especially since the imbalance of the Premier League has changed the game) will be cyclical and is not guaranteed. If the Board asked for £100 off every supporter, I wonder how many would invest that in ‘their’ club?

Excellent comments AL. I suspect the Academy would be there if the first team wasn't. Clearly in a different form. But existing, nonetheless.

I would AL if the board would give me an interest free loan.
