Downes scored v Leicester - have a look at the video!
I think you're mixing up several different cup games... Storrie scored with a header at the Holte End v Villa away, and I think it was v Leeds at Millmoor that Downes missed from a few feet near the end of the game (which finished 0-0)

I went to both games(Nuneaton aswell). We couldn't get in for the crowds at Filbert St, so we just pushed in to the front in the home end queue, we just kept quiet thro the match. Had hard lines and lost 2-0 in extra time. Didn't we sell Stevie Downes just after to the Fowls?

Yes, but I think that he soon got injured and didn't do much after that. Should have stayed with the Millers. Actually, I'm not sure that he even wanted to leave, but RUFC needed the money at the time. Some things never change!

Getting out of the ground after the match was probably the main danger point, as Millmoor only had exit gates on the Tivoli End plus just one more right at the bottom of Millmoor Lane in the 60s. An extra, but fairly narrow, exit gate was later added halfway up Millmoor Lane about 1970(?)

It's hard to believe that the Leicester FA Cup match was 50 years ago.
I think that the largest crowd I was in at Millmoor was for the Burnley cup replay game in 1964. Crowds on thr touchline and the crushing to get into the ground was frightening. Went to both Leicester games and was lucky to get in. At the back and yes it was a bit tight lol.

Wasn't it Johnny Fantham who missed the sitter against Leeds? I think Downes was at the Wendy's by then.

I was at that Burnley cup game. I was only 7 years old at the time. My Dad took me into the ground fairly early and got an empty beer crate from the supporters club bar for me to stand on in the Railway End, and I leaned against a barrier. Without the beer crate I wouldn't have been able to see the pitch! I think that it was "pay on the day" - which meant that the crowd could have been more than the "official attendance" as there were no computerised turnstiles in those days

Just checked - it wasn't Downes who missed , as you said, he'd gone to T'Pigs by then. Could have been Fantham.

Just watched video. Millmoor packed to the rafters. Alan Hill my type of keeper, he catches the ball when it's his. Downes with the goal. I can remember Downes missing from close in at Millmoor at the railway end in a big game. Tommy Doc looking like a manager should. Great memories.
