Hello Boingy, you may want to get yourself a coffee as this is going to take a while.
I don't think anyone's forgotten the wins against Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal or Liverpool Boingy. Likewise I doubt anyone's forgotten much of the putrid sh ite that was served up during TP's first full season. That putrid sh ite was kept in the memory bank as his credit finally ran out when results matched performances by the end of his second full season and into the start of his third. By the way, without checking I’m pretty sure TP wasn’t the first Albion manager of recent times to have beaten most of the teams mentioned above. Di Matteo, Roy Hodgson and Clarke may want a collective word.
There's only so many times you can pay to see little beyond bodies behind the ball and set pieces before interest and love for your team merges into one long drudge of boredom. I should know as I had the ‘pleasure’ of attending the vast majority of games home and away during his tenure. I'll tell you why things turned Boingy. He outstayed his welcome. Kemp saw it coming and jumped ship. TP could see the writing on the wall too but stayed on when Lai offered him more money to pay his court costs. He knew the players were as fed up with him as much of the support base and realised he was on borrowed time. He lost his mojo, ran out of ideas and lost his way.
TP is very effective at what he does but his methods have a relatively short shelf life in terms of interest. I genuinely hoped our style would evolve along with the ability of the squad but it did not. He bored the sh it out of everyone and when his saving grace (results) came to an end then so did his tenure. It was a natural consequence. We'll never know for sure but I remain convinced he'd have taken us down and lost his precious 'never been relegated' tag. The crime wasn't replacing him. It was replacing him with a self-loving footballing fkwhit who probably struggles to walk passed a mirror without having a w@nk. Well that and employing the football equivalent of a circus chimpanzee as his coach (Carver) of course.
When TP was appointed as Boro boss I suggested he'd get them up via the play offs. But when push came to shove he reverted to type. He shut up shop and played for percentages despite having the tools at his disposal to consign Villa to the play off scrap heap. Rather like he did with us when we played them twice in 'that' week and for the unfortunately remembered 0-0 at ours. He may well beat us on Friday, play a bit more football, go on to fulfil his remit and take Boro up then keep them there. But at what cost to their support base and the club’s identity though? You can see for yourself just what a divisive character he is.
I never slated the man when in situ because I want all of our managers to succeed. If they do then we’re successful by association. But by the end I was just glad to see the back of him, and in all honesty he should have been out of the door much sooner than he was. If Boro do go up I will not envy them. I support West Bromwich Albion and want us to succeed by our own merits far more than I want to see others fail. We may miss out this year but such is life. All I care about is having our club back and looking forward to going to games again for something other than the piss up.
All of the best Boingy and COYB
