You mean like Swindon and Oldham have benefited from playing in the Premier League? If we’d stayed up in 1991/92, we’d have still gone down at some point soon after - we were minnows but without a wealthy benefactor like Bournemouth have now.

Worst thing about our times in the top division was how we were unable to build on them straight after - double relegation in 83/84 and 84/85, and relegation to “Division 4” just a couple of years after being on the verge of the playoffs to the Premier League and a spanking new 20,000 stadium.

The only way I could see us not having the struggles we’ve had this century is if Forest’s decline had been terminal and we existed on a more even footing with them, like in the mid-70s - but whenever they imploded (like their spell in “Division 3”), we were never able to take advantage.

If we'd stayed up in 1992, the three clubs we would have had to finish above the following season would have been Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and..................................

    Fword!!!!

So 92/93 could have been a very interesting season indeed.

Longer term I'm not so sure it would have made too much difference, Oldham (who went up with us) stayed up for three seasons but look where they are now. Bradford City had two seasons at the top circa 2000 and have crashed into the 4th tier twice since then.
We might have avoided the admin scenario and non-league but Notts being Notts we probably still would have been made to suffer a fair bit over the last 25 years.

Im not so sure that they would have fallen, certainly not as low as they have done, and neither is colin slater

They remained in the 2nd tier for 3 years without all the mega money, and parachute payments they receive these days
When they finished 7th in 94 i think, this difference that would have got them in the play offs, or maybe automatic, and a return to the top flight

However i agree, being its notts county, they would have found some way to stuff it up, and make us suffer

As to Warnock and hoofball, he took a lot of stick for that mostly because he followed the footballing philosophy of Barnwell and a lot of the favourites were “hoofed” our of the club (mills, Thorpe etc) both to reduce the wage bill and to get the kind of player Warnock wanted.

Whilst he made no bones about his back four/five not messing around in their own half, they were absolutely not Wimbledon.

We played two quick players up front and played balls over the top or in behind them and in the channels, and pushed the back four/five high up the pitch. And fought for every ball.

Players like Thomas, Turner, o’riordan and Draper were ball players and were regulars in the side as we moved up the leagues.

Realistically the only way we could compete was by playing that way. Unlike the real hoof all served up by Nolan it was entertaining and some good football was played by some excellent players.

I remember several memorable trips down south over the years. Here’s 3 of my earlier ones.

    15.01.1972 – FA Cup – 13,488 - Watford 1 Notts Co 4
A 3rd Round FA Cup game saw us completely outplay Watford. Our reward was a 4th Round trip to the Baseball Ground where Derby beat us 6-0.

    25.08.1973 – 2nd Tier – 20,841 - Crystal Palace 1 Notts Co 4
The first game of the season. Malcolm Allison’s Palace had been relegated from the top division, and we’d been promoted from the 3rd. Don Rogers scored early on but then Notts completely dominated the game. A superb performance by Sir Jimmy’s team.

    20.11.1976 – 2nd Tier – 12,191 – Fulham 1 Notts Co 5
A memorable game because the Fulham side included Bobby Moore, George Best and Rodney Marsh. Mistakes by Moore resulted in a couple of goals, and Steve Carter ran from his own half to score with a screamer (see below).

Someone else who remembers that Palace game Thank you so much for that link, what a goal by Stevie Carter! Another Notts video started automatically after that one, it was the Man City game. Always worth a watch, so if you want to pass a very happy few minutes, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acdX9XH20cw

Yes I thought that as well, but in those days we just used to sing it continuously without the “Counteh” clap clap clap at the end.

We used to sing it a lot slower back then and would just repeat it for ages, as you say without the “County” bit at the end.

The first time I remember hearing Notts fans singing it was at St Andrews, Birmingham on a Tuesday night. I think this was not long after the song was ‘born’ at Shrewsbury....

It got sung at the next home game after Shrewsbury but only by a handful and I was standing directly in front of them, I remember thinking "What the hell is that?" but assumed it was something they'd heard opposition fans sing in a recent away game.

In terms of getting a response from the team, I still don't feel that any Notts chant or song has ever been as effective as Coun-ty cha cha cha (repeat) when it was sung on its own in the old stands. All home stands would join in, usually started by those standing at the front of the main stand, though often prompted by a chorus of "Main stand, give us a song" on County Road.

Going back to Charlton, it was so long ago now that Thatcher was still PM until the December of that season, but I'm still angry about it, we didn't travel in the snow on the advice of the police and the forecast gave no warning of it being heavy, so it was not our fault. Charlton however insisted that we should have traveled down the day before!
