I think it’s the Millers very own Don Weston. It was the National Service clue that led me to this since it set the era. Playing in two important matches with different results would have been the First League Cup Final in 1961. The Aston Villa manager was Joe Mercer and Weston was bought by Don Revie at Leeds after he left Rotherham - so both future England Managers. Don Weston played for Wrexham at one point which gives the England and Wales connection.

I shall have egg all over my face if I’m wrong after all this...

Winner. Sometimes pays to be in the same time zone. I thought you might get this one. You can keep a clean face. In fact talking of faces I think Don Weston might actually be in the photograph you took your avatar from, he's at least in some similar I saw.

    I am Don Weston

I plied my trade in England and Wales. RUFC, Leeds, Wrexham (twice) and a few others

I'd say I was an above average goal scorer. Just better than 1 in 3 throughout my career.

I can confirm my father didn't miss a crucial penalty. Another anagram puzzler. Donald Weston = Not Waddle Son

I played in two important games with very different results. 2 legs of League Cup Final

The opposition in those two games were lead by a future England manager. Joe Mercer

I was once signed by a different future England manager. Don Revie

I played in a team full of Englishmen. The whole 1960-61 RUFC 1st XI

I am not at risk with the current situation. Sadly I died in 2007

I was once bought to replace a legend. Revie bought me to replace John Charles at Leeds

The start of my footballing career was put on hold for National Service. Signed as a amateur for Leeds at 16. Did National Service. Joined Wrexham as a pro at 22

I remember Don Weston scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Millmoor on a boxing day game.

Think you’re right about the time zone. In fact I’d gone to bed early still thinking about the last clues and then half made the connection with the League Cup Final. Rather than wait til the morning, I put the light back on and started to dig a bit more deeply...

It’s a great feeling to get one of these quiz questions right. As you say, they are not easy.

My avatar picture is from a team photo that includes Don, you’re right. However I lifted it from Adrian Booth’s book “The First Finalists”
