I'm angry at the faux activist journalists who are telling us what we should do, especially when we have no say in who owns the club. That really gets my back up, Miguel Delaney being one in particular. What a Richard (Nickname).
However the more I read on the issue, the more and more uncomfortable I become.
Yes they are diversifying their country's wealth by investing in different projects to reduce their reliance on Oil revenues. It's only wise given the way nations around the globe are making big commitments to clean energy and only using electric cars within the next 25 years etc.
But is that what they are doing with Newcastle United Football Club? Diversifying? We are all smart enough to know that that is not the case. They are either doing it to improve their image ('Sportswash') to the rest of the world so that foreign businesses & investors will be more likely to invest in their country which took a huge hit with that whole embassy incident or they are doing it to have a fun plaything.
Either way make no mistake, we are being used. They can invest in the north east and provide new jobs with development which would be great for the reigion (Multiple UK governments have certainly looked other way because of all the UK jobs provided by Arms sales to the Kingdom).
Do the Saudi's have a right to do what is in the best interest of their people and nation? 100% YES. It looks like purchasing Newcastle United football club will help them in their longterm goals of improving their country. Yes they have made some positive strides, women being allowed to drive being one of them. However, I feel the more and more you educate yourself on the issue and recent goings on, the more and more uncomfortable you will become.
That said if we go and sign Top 6 calibre players and start competing again, my discomfort might completely disappear. I am certainly no activist like certain journalists pretend to be, I'm just a fickle football fan. The people in the media trying to foment discontent in the stands of St James' Park against our new owners can jog on and carry out their own protests in the press box if they are such activists and really do care about the issues more than the clicks they are getting. Something tells me they won't.
