As said above Grosicki, we do need strengthening in that area though.
Diangana can play on both sides. Although he featured predominantly on the left for us his preferred position is on the right. His performances on the left demonstrate both his talent and versatility. Pereira, Grosicki, Phillips and Edwards can also play either side. If we sign Grant as well he can play anywhere across a front three. Barring a crippling injury list our forward balance should be fine. I'm not quite as comfortable with our defensive balance or our goalkeeping custodian though.
We wouldn’t be in the premier if it wasn’t for Kanu last season. Austin scored 4 goals. The rest were penalties. Kanu scored 1 penalty. The rest were goals in open play. He’s a valuable squad player and made a big difference to the team even when he came on as a sub. Do I see him as a starter this season? Not if we recruit a prolific goal scorer, but then Kanu is known as an attacking midfielder/ winger. Reading decided to use him as a striker and now everyone expects 20 goals a season. Even as a striker for us he spends a lot of time wide right just in case you never noticed. Most managers last season said he was a real handful to deal with. He draws defences away which allows the other players to freely do their stuff. For our team and way of play no one links up better than Kanu with pareira. But then I like the guy and you just slag him off so you probably never noticed.
I still think we need to strengthen the defence before we worry about the wide right position, left back, goalkeeper, defensive midfield all worry me more than wide right. Certainly we also need a goal scorer as the priority.
Not ideal but between Phillips, Tulloch and Edwards surely enough to get by for now and give the youngsters some opportunities. That said I am still hopeful that we will get Krovinovic back for another season at least and that would sort it.
The answer is an on form Matt Philips. I've seen a few 'streaky' players in my time but I've thought for a long time Phillips was an extreme example.
Last season stats bear this out. Before Xmas he scored 7 a great return for a winger. After Xmas none, zilch, nothing and it wasn't just his lack of goals that was so disappointing.
Yes I'd like to see another winger but for me well down the list after striker(2) box to box midfielder and GK in that order.
